Pitch count ignored

This happens all too frequently. My LH stopper threw the 9th inning in a tie game, logging 22 pitches. His pitch count limit is set to 20. We score 2 in the top of the 10th, but they leave him in the game for the entire 10th. He gives up a grand slam after a total of 48 pitches, and we lose. Our long guy was available and had sufficient rest. Why did the AI ignore my pitch count limit setting?

Where did you set the pitch counts?

I have read somewhere here that this can make a difference, as some pitch count entries are considered hard caps while others are better thought of as guidelines and as such could be more susceptible to variables like rested arms and the roles of available pitchers.

It's under Player Strategy. You can reach it from the Strategy tab or from the player's Actions... menu "Set Game Strategy."

Okay, so you did set the actual Max Pitch Count then. Off-hand, I do not know why it ignored this value. This could be indicative of more variables being involved in the decision than previously believed.

Additionally, ,most people seem to use the Pitch Count field for Starters on the Pitching tab in a same (or similar at least) manner. I have read others who make a compelling case that this is not the same setting. Regardless, there seems to be a significant amount of confusion surrounding this setting, of which, this is another important layer.

max pitch count is on the overall game strategy screen and is ONLY for starting pitchers. would not solve this problem.

Perhaps the pitch count limits are disregarded once the game enters extra innings? If so, I'm not crazy about that idea. I don't limit my long relief pitchers, but I place limits on the rest of my bullpen for a reason. Even if the AI is worried about running out of arms, it should not override my pitch count limits.

Where are you getting this information from? Pitch counts for relief pitchers from the player strategy screen are available and appear to work fine 98% of the time...

There's a global pitch count setting for SP, that applies if the individual starter does not have a pitch count set.

Otherwise for either SP or RP you can set a pitch count in the strategies, and they should follow them, as long as you have another rested pitcher available. They may stretch them a little bit (ie. face a batter more than the pitch count), but they certainly shouldn't be going a full extra inning.
