From the Detroit Tribune...Supporters of Hank Griffin have questioned the verdict of referee Billy Roche giving the win and American Boxing Association title to James J Corbett...Roche scored rounds 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11 and 12 for Corbett and 1, 3, 6, 7, 10 for Griffin with none even though many at ringside remarked that several rounds, including ones for Corbett, were extremely close...There were no knockdowns...Mexican Pete Everett upset the oddsmakers in New York with a 3rd round kayo of Patsy Cardiff the favourite going in...The International Boxing Union has declared that any world champion who successfully defends his title three times will be allowed to keep the IBU championship belt permanently and a new one will be awarded to the man who finally defeats him...

Thumbs up Nice League

Nice League! You have obviously put a lot of work into it. Love the newspaper clippings. How do you do them?

Excerpt from the Toronto Telegram Morning edition...When James Corbett waffled on the terms set by George Chuvalo to meet him for the title Phila. Jack O'Brien jumped on a flyer of the New York-Pennsylvania line to Toronto and happily signed the articles of agreement...Referee John Eckhardt gave O'Brien five rounds, Chuvalo only three and scored rounds 4, 6 and 9 even...Most experts at ringside had O'Brien ahead 8 rounds to 3 going into the 12th...O'Brien took home almost $1,800 as the loser's end of the purse and $500 from the gate receipts...

Clipped from the Halifax Chronicle...John L Sullivan suffers a bad cut in round 3 and is forced to retire inside the distance against George Godfrey despite being ahead in the eyes of most visiting Boston fans...Godfrey's rooters are jubilant and carry their man from the ring escorted by local constables...Sullivan accuses New York referee John Eckhardt of being paid off by parties unknown to decide in favour of the negro battler...Wins on card at Hazard's Pavilion sets up likely match between Bakersfield's Irish Jerrry Quarry and "The Mission Boy" Big Joe McAuliffe...Louisiana's Lionel "The Train" Butler racks up another win and joins the ranks of the world's best heavyweights...Bob Armstrong can't seem to chalk up two wins in a row as he loses a rough one to Yank Kenny...young Denver Ed Martin bites off more than he can chew when he takes on John Klondike Haynes in the latter's hometown...Frank Childs finally gets a decisive win over Patsy Cardiff...In the space of two weeks Hank Griffin beats Charlie Mitchell and Kid McCoy and signs to fight the best available contender for promoter Harry Kline..

From the December 1891 issue of Mitt Slingers Magazine...Peter Jackson and Bob Fitzsimmons are both in training camp in Los Angeles preparing for their championship contest next month...Perhaps yielding to pressure from the international sporting press the IBU has mandated that George Chuvalo the NABF champion and James Corbett the ABA champion must meet to decide who will get the next crack at the world championship ....The championship committee however, has added this could be altered if Fitzsimmons emerges the winner against Jackson...Tom Sharkey is angling for a fight with either Phila. Jack O'Brien or newcomer Gus Ruhlin...George Godfrey, after recent wins over Frank Slavin and John L Sullivan, is said to be wondering what he has to do to get a match with one of the top contenders...For his part, Sullivan is complaining in the pages of the Boston Globe that he should be ranked much higher by the IBU considering he has wins over three men currently included in the prestigious Top Ten.

Typical penny poster advertising a pugilistic contest (See a previous post), in this case between two notable California prize fighters in a pivotal match-up...McAuliffe is a heavy favourite going in but Quarry is a tough proposition with dynamite in both hands...McAuliffe holds wins over Jake Kilrain, Frank Childs, Patsy Cardiff, Joe Lannon, Kallie Knoetze, Steve O'Donnell, Frank Slavin and Mexican Pete Everett...Quarry has wins over Joe Kennedy, Utah Jack Davis, Joe Lannon, Bob Armstrong, Joe Choynski and Frank Slavin...

Clipped from the December issue of Mitt Slingers Magazine...Jackson is a heavy favourite at almost 3 to 1 in most betting parlours...special trains have been laid on to bring in sports from all over the west coast...The Sydney Mail has sent a reporter to cover the fight as have papers from London, Paris, Berlin and Stockholm...Most major US dailies will have men on site to send back wire reports as rounds progress..There is talk of Tom Sharkey meeting Gus Ruhlin on the undercard...Interest in the main event has been such that the Olympic Club may charge as much as $75 for a ringside seat...It is reliably rumoured that several wealthy sports including "Diamond Jim Brady" himself, have pooled contributions to increase the fight's purse to at least $24,000...

Cover of December issue of Mitt-Slingers Magazine...Contains articles discussing various merits of the two combatants as well as brief biographies and their compete detailed ring records...Also a fanciful article imagining current boxers pitted against past greats...Includes No.11 in a continuing series of posters of popular fighters and a cartoon by that new fellow Tad Dorgan...

Clipped from the Los Angeles Herald...Peter Jackson and Bob Fitzsimmons split purse of $20,000 seventy-five percent to the winner and both take a small cut of the gate receipts...Most newspaper scribblers at ringside are of the opinion after the fact that Fitz gave away too much weight...As Fitzsimmons is carted away by his seconds Tom Sharkey jumps into the ring and issues a challenge to Jackson...The California representative of the IBU declares Jackson must defend against the winner of the scheduled fight between George Chuvalo and James J Corbett...The American Boxing Association demands James J Corbett defend his title against their leading contender within three months or relinquish the belt...
