Why are WAR(P) calculations so different on Baseball Reference and Baseball Prospectus?

I understand (sort of) why the pitching WARs are different: BP uses DRA, while BR uses RA/9. But why are the hitting and fielding WARs different? And not by a little either.

Because WAR is the definitive non-subjective stat that tells all and beats all. No point of view can stand up against the almighty WAR.

I still share a bit of CM's antipathy in this regard but not as much anymore. Not since I realized that WAR (and some other advanced statistics) can be quite useful given acceptance of these four conditions:
  • That the statistic is being calculated by a reliable source such as BP and BR (and OOTPB).
  • That the statistic is being calculated in a consistent fashion.
  • That however the statistic is being calculated, I understand that it is an arbitrary measure whose only value is in its consistency.
  • That whichever way the statistic is being calculated, it being arbitrary means the method is going to vary according to the source and therefore, trying to compare similarly named statistics like WAR across various sources will be frustrating and fruitless.
So, I use WAR (and a few other sabermetric stats) now but ONLY WITHIN OOTPB. Elsewhere, I don't pay any attention to WAR.

I think that is the main point next gen stat fans need to get into their thinking process. I do not hate the stat. No matter who is doing the formula. I hate people acting like it is the period that ends the discussion.

Sorry to Elendil for derailing the thread. I should have resisted the temptation.

To the contrary, I think we have answered his question in my opinion.

Thank you for that!!!!!!! Sheesh. I thought I'd be the one to do it!

I do hate it precisely because people act like it is the period that ends the discussion...or for that matter that they act and believe it to be objective, which it absolutely is not....on its face, if it were objective, it would be universally the same no matter who computes it. But it is not. Because it's made up of components used differently depending on who making up the number.

No worries. That IS a bit of the upshot of my question. What is WAR's value over replacement statistic, when it's so variable?
