Jordan Caps Comeback Victory

May 21, 1989

Philadelphia, PA - The Phillies were able to prevent a three game sweep by the San Diego Padres Saturday on the backs of Von Hayes and Ricky Jordan. With the team trailing by two in the bottom of the 7th, Hayes came to the plate with Juan Samuel on first. He promptly took a 2-1 fastball over the right field fence for this 11th HR of the season, thus tying the game.

In the bottom of the 9th, with a runner on second, Manager Nick Leyva turned to Jordan who has seen less playing time since the arrival of Wally Joyner. With Steve Jeltz on first after a one out walk, Ricky Jordan tore a curveball into the left field alley scoring Jeltz and winning the game for Philadelphia.

"If he keeps playing like this," Leyva said after the game, "well, that's how you earn playing time." Joyner has not delivered since joining Philadelphia from the California Angels. The 26 year old lefty is hitting just .143 for Philadelphia with a solitary RBI.

Juan Samuel, on the other hand, has been on a tear. After getting off to a slow start this year, Samuel is hitting .344 in May with 6 RBI. His OBP for the month is an astounding .411. Samuel is currently third in the NL with 14 stolen bases, a whopping 10 behind St. Louis' Vince Coleman.

The Phillies are currently 21-23, 9 games out of first place. Today is a travel day, as the team takes on the Dodgers on the west coast tomorrow.

Herr's Return Unclear

May 26, 1989

PHILADELPHIA, PA - Tommy Herr went down two weeks ago with an oblique strain, and his recovery is not going as well as the Phillies would have hoped. Herr was due to come off the Injured List tomorrow, but that will not be happening.

The Phillies could really use Herr's bat in the lineup too. Before his injury, the second baseman was hitting .323 with a .393 OBP, mostly out of the leadoff spot. With Juan Samuel's resurgence, Herr could be moved back down into his more familiar #2 spot, allowing the struggling Wally Joyner to be moved down in the lineup to let him try and find his swing here in Philadelphia.

The 21-26 Phillies currently find themselves 11 games out of first place. They are continuing their west coast road trip with a three game set against the first place San Francisco Giants.

Joyner Shines in West Coast Return

May 26, 1989

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The Phillies came into Friday's game fresh off of being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers. They would not, however, lose their fourth in a row. A strong performance from pitcher Pat Combs who stymied the San Francisco offense en route to a 6-2 win at Candlestick Park was good enough for the young pitcher's first career victory.

The Phillies got a big at-bat from third baseman Mike Schmidt who showed that he still has a little left in the tank. In the top of the seventh, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run over the left field wall. His 2nd home run of the season gave the Phillies a 3-2 lead.

Wally Joyner, who has been struggling, went 3 for 4 on the day with an RBI and a run scored. His offensive contributions were long overdue. Ricky Jordan added a pinch hit home run of his own in the top of the 9th.

Rookie Felix Jose once again found himself on the bench, in favor of Chris James who went 1 for 4 at the plate. Jose has struggled defensively this year, recording 8 errors mostly in left field.

Combs put up his second strong performance in as many starts. This one was good enough for a win. The rookie threw 82 pitches in 6 innings of work, striking out 5 while walking 3 and giving up 5 hits. A trio of pitchers closed out the game, with Steve Bedrosian pitching a scoreless 9th to lower his ERA to 1.93 in a non-save situation.
