Friday, June 13, Year III

We are in Minneapolis to play the Twins a 3 game series over the weekend. They just lost 2 of 3 in Oakland. Not counting games against us, they are 3-14 in their last 17 games, but they split 4 games with us in Portland last weekend. They are 5th in scoring in the PCL with 4.38 runs per game (Portland is #4 with 4.46). They are 12th (last) in fewest runs allowed with 5.23 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.36). Their bum pitchers shut us down in 3 of the 4 games last weekend.

Portland Beavers (39-22 .639 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Minnesota Twins (26-34 .433 7.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL East)

POR: Don Panighetti (26-L 5-2 2.85) 2 time All-Star vs. MIN: Clint Mashburn (24-R 0-2 3.96) Rookie

Spaghetti Panighetti faced the Twins in his last start and gave up 6 runs and 10 hits in 4.2 IP and did not look anything like the All-Star pitcher we traded for before Year II.

Mashburn held us to 2 runs in 6 IP last weekend. He had a 6.06 ERA in A Ball (A Ball!) this year in 6 starts before joining the Twins...

Ballpark: The Metrodome
Weather: Indoors
Attendance: 28,291

Top of the First:
Omar Flores swings at the first pitch and hits a home run to right! 1 to 0, Beavers! M-V-P! M-V-P! M-V-P! I cannot get the crowd to take the chant up with me... Jeff Schottler takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three... Pablo Mateo grounds out to 3rd. Damien Carr is up. The Metrodome is tailor made for his swing and if he does not hit a home run this weekend, I will look into trading his $5 million behind... He lines a 2-2 pitch into the left field seats! 2 to 0, Beavers! Tony Casarez grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the First:

Mike Francoeur strikes out! Oh! I hope the old Panighetti has returned! Victor Fabela grounds out to 2nd. Duke Ford takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Rick Ingledue flies out to right!

Top of the Third:

With 1 out, Pablo Mateo doubles to the right field corner. Damien Carr lines a hit to center and Mateo stops at 3rd. Tony Casarez lines out to 3rd and Steve Stevenson steps on the bag to double off Mateo...

Top of the Sixth:

After a good start, we have done nothing... Damien Carr leads off with a walk and Tony Casarez beats out an infield hit. Dave Lesley bunts the runners up. They walk Woody Griesbach, who has struck out his first two times up, intentionally to pitch to Dennis Webb. He grounds into a force at home, 5-2. 2 outs. P Don Panighetti grounds out to 3rd...

Top of the Seventh:
Omar Flores leads off with a walk. With 1 out, Pablo Mateo takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. That is the sixth walk we have today. P Clint Mashburn, at 121 pitches, is relieved. New Pitcher: Ed Collins (30-R) with a 5.09 ERA in 17.2 IP. He beans Damien Carr to load the bases up with 1 out. Carr has to leave the game because he was hit on the hand and Larry Sinchak goes in to run for him. Tony Casarez grounds into a force at home, 3-2... 2 outs. Dave Lesley swings at the first pitch and grounds a hit to left and Mateo scores! 3 to 0, Beavers! Woody Griesbach lines a hit to center and Sinchak scores and Casarez comes around 3rd and beats the throw home! 5 to 0, Beavers! Dennis Webb grounds out to 3rd to end the inning. Eddie Thomas will go in to play short and Dave Lesley will move to 1st.

Top of the Eighth:
P Don Panighetti and Omar Flores lead off with back-to-back singles. Jeff Schottler grounds into a 5-4-3 double play and Panighetti goes to 3rd... Pablo Mateo grounds a hit to center and Panighetti scores! 6 to 0, Beavers! Eddie Thomas draws a 4 pitch walk. Tony Casarez swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd...

Top of the Ninth:

Dave Lesley takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4, our ninth walk of the game. Woody Griesbach grounds a hit to center. Dennis Webb grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Lesley goes to 3rd. P Ed Collins is hurt and has to leave. New Pitcher: Eddie Amos (37-L), their former closer, with a 4.71 ERA. P Don Panighetti tries to bunt, but pops out to the pitcher... 2 outs. Omar Flores grounds out to 1st, unassisted...

Won - 6 to 0

3 straight complete games!
That is a Beaver first!
Is the old Panighetti back? Or did he just have a good game?

We had 11 hits and made no errors
Minnesota had 5 hits and made no errors

Don Panighetti (W 6-2) went 9 shutout innings (CG), allowed 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. 103 pitches. If he had struck out 6, I would be more confident that this was not just an aberration in his downward spiral... At bat, he had a hit and scored a run.

Clint Mashburn (L 0-3) went 6.1 innings, gave us 4 runs, 5 hits, 2 home runs, 7 walks (1 INT) and struck out 4. He threw a WP. At bat, he had a hit.

3B Omar Flores had 3 hits with his 2nd home run, 2 walks and stole a base. 2B Pablo Mateo had 2 hits with a double and a walk, scored a run and had an RBI. 1B Damien Carr went 2 for 2 with his 3rd home run as a Beaver, drew a walk and was beaned. PR Larry Sinchak scored a run. SS Eddie Thomas drew a walk in his only PA. SS/1B Dave Lesley had a hit and 2 walks and an RBI. RF Woody Griesbach had 2 hits and a walk (INT) and 2 RBI.

The Twins announced that P Ed Collins strained his back, but should be fine in a few days.

Pepe says Damien Carr has a bad bruise on his hand and will not be able to swing a bat for a week...

POR: Tom Horn (26-L 1-2 2.27) vs. MIN: Joe Nelson (22-R 0-1 7.62) Rookie

When Horn pitches, the Beavers either do not score (last 2 starts) or the Bullpen implodes (the 2 before). He is 0-1 in his last 4 starts, though he has a 2.54 ERA in 28.1 IP....

Today is the Trade Deadline, but we are not looking to make anymore trades. I considered moving 1B Damien Carr, since we will not re-sign him, but we'll just take the 2 picks we will get if someone else signs him.

Portland Beavers (41-22 .651 in 1st place in the PCL West) at

POR: Brian Hagans (27-R 6-2 3.84) vs. MIN: Jose Nieves (30-R 2-2 3.78)

Hagans has won his last 3 starts.

Nieves is their #1 starter and the only one in their rotation with an ERA under 4.00. He was 14-12 with a 3.60 ERA last year. We faced him twice last year and he did not have a decision, but only gave us 2 runs in 10.1 IP.

Bottom of the Eleventh:

With 1 out, Jerry Walker triples off the center field wall... .250 hitter with his 4th hit of the day... Juan Aleman up and the Suicide Squeeze is on! Pablo Mateo pops out to shallow center. 2 outs. Omar Flores doubles to right and both runners score!! 6 to 4, Beavers! Jeff Schottler doubles to left center and Flores scores! 7 to 4, Beavers! Woody Griesbach lines a 3-2 pitch to right for a hit and Schottler scores without a throw! 8 to 4, Beavers! Tony Casarez lines a 3-2 pitch to right for a hit and Griesbach goes to 3rd. That does it for P Ron Singerman. New Pitcher: Ed Collins (30-R), who is not only tired, but also is pitching with a bad back. Dave Lesley walks to load the bases up for the fella that started it out: P Brian Dunbar. He grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Fifteenth:

P Ed Collins has to lead things off and he pops one up to 1st, but Tony Casarez drops it for an error... With 1 out, Jesus Keeme lines a hit to left... Marcos Falcon pops one out to shallow right that drops for a hit and the bases are loaded with 1 out for Jerry Walker, who already has 4 hits today... There is no one to get up in the Bullpen.... Walker doubles down the right field line and two runs score... 8 to 6, Beavers. And the tying run is in scoring position... Juan Aleman flies out to center and the runners hold. 2 outs. Duke Ford swings at a 1-0 pitch and hits a home run to left center.... Ball game... Our Bullpen is just cursed....that is the only explanation... I am numb...

We signed #1 pick Tommie Jefferson (21-R) to a contract for a bonus of $65,000.

RP Brian Dunbar (31-R) has been waived and designated for assignment... We do not want to ever see him again. SP Dave Sutton (25-L) has been called up from Vancouver (AAA) to start a game today. We have 7 games in the next 5 days...

We are in Los Angeles to play a 4 game series in the next three days, beginning with a doubleheader today. The Angels lost 2 of 3 in Milwaukee over the weekend and have lost 5 of their last 6. We are 4-1 against them this season and won 2 games the first time we were in Los Angeles, April 29-30. They are 11th in the PCL in scoring with 4.00 runs per game (Portland is 3rd with 4.59). They are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.98 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.34).

The Angels announced that P Chuck Dalton would be going on the DL with a finger avulsion. I did not know what it was either, but Pepe says it is when a tendon comes loose and pulls a bit of bone with it... Uck. They say he should be okay by the time his 15 days is up. Jim Dingess has a pulled hammy and should be limping around for a week or two, but can maybe play through it.

Pepe's report on Gordon Saunderson is a bruised thigh that will bother him hitting a bit and running a lot, but should heal up within a week. That gives us 3 players on the roster now that cannot play, but we do not want to put on the DL...

OF Rollie Ferree (29-R) was sent to Vancouver (AAA) and SP Larry Smith (28-R) was called up to start the game today.

We are back home to play the San Francisco Seals a 5 game series through the weekend. Doubleheader tomorrow after we just played one on Monday. Not fair... Well, fair, I guess, because the Seals played a doubleheader on Tuesday. Cruel, though... The Seals split 4 games in San Diego. We are 5-0 against them this season and won 2 games the last time they were in Portland. They are 11th in the PCL in scoring with 3.90 runs per game (After the 17 run game, Portland is up to #2 with 4.82!) They are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.69 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.22).

San Francisco Seals (27-40 .403 17.5 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL West) at

SF: Willie Rosales (28-R 2-5 4.81) vs. POR: Larry Smith (28-R 3-0 2.70)

Rosales has only allowed 1 earned run total in his last 2 starts (13 IP), but has 2 no decisions. We have never faced him.

Smith has pitched very well for us, but like Dave Sutton, he has gotten shuffled out due to some of our veterans getting healthy. Since being sent down to Vancouver (AAA), he has had a 1.40 ERA in 4 starts.

Another new team record crowd for a regular season game, excepting Opening Days!

Dan Fortino, who is 0 for 16 lifetime versus Angel Gaspar, lines a hit to center. Bill Giffin flies out to left. Chris Greenwald grounds into a 5-4-3 double play!

Bottom of the First:
Omar Flores leads off with a walk. Jeff Schottler doubles to left and Flores scores from 1st! 1 to 0, Beavers! Woody Griesbach grounds out to short and Schottler takes 3rd. Griesbach steals 2nd. Tony Casarez lines a hit to center and both runners score and Casarez ends up on 2nd! 5 to 0, Beavers. And that is it for P Erich Haywood's Major League debut. New Pitcher: Ray Studer (29-R) with a 6.10 ERA. He gets a pair of ground outs to end the inning.

Top of the Fourth:
Bill Giffin leads off with a home run to right center... 5 to 1, Beavers. That is his first home run of the season and his second off Gaspar in his career... Chris Greenwald follows with another home run to nearly the same spot... 5 to 2, Beavers. With 1 out, Tim Roberts grounds a 3-2 pitch to left for a hit and then Ron Chestnut gets hit by a pitch. Then Gaspar balks... Clint Graham pops out to shallow left and the runners hold. 2 outs. Chip Carpenter lines out to left. This has not been as pretty a game as the last three starts for Angel Gaspar.... They have 6 hits already... And Gaspar has struck out no one...

Bottom of the Eighth:

San Francisco Seals (28-43 .394 19.5 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (48-24 .667 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SF: Larry Lee (24-L 0-0 3.00) Rookie vs. POR: Tom Wagner (35-L 5-1 2.01) All-Star (Yr I)

We get a veteran pitcher today: Lee is making his 2nd Major League start. He had a solid first one against the Padres, going 6 innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 walk and striking out 3. He allowed 4 runs, but only 2 were earned. For Phoenix (AAA), he was 4-3 with a 2.09 ERA in 12 starts.

In his first start as a Beaver, Wagner had to leave in the 4th inning with an injury, but he has won all 5 of his starts since. His only loss as a Beaver came in relief when he was pressed into service even though he was tired.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)

PORTLAND
1: CF Jeff Schottler (26-R .325-271-4-32-.814)
2: SS Eddie Thomas (27-R .247-89-3-13-.825) Gold Glove (Yr I)
3: RF Woody Griesbach (25-R .307-192-5-29-.826)
4: 2B Pablo Mateo (25-R .269-156-6-22-.787) Silver Slugger Gold Glove
5: RF Tim Segal (38-R .261-46-0-6-.685)
6: LF Tony Casarez (21-L .307-261-12-49-.884)
7: C Phil Parker (29-S .267-105-3-19-.759)
8: 3B Larry Sinchak (32-R .224-76-0-5-.504)
9: P Tom Wagner (35-L .235-17-0-6-.529) All-Star (Yr I)

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 63 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 9 MPH wind blowing in from right.
Attendance: 27,931

Top of the First:
Dan Fortino flies out to left. Gary Halbert doubles over the center fielder's head... He tries to steal 3rd and C Phil Parker throws him out! Sandy Mojica doubles down the left field line... Tim Roberts grounds out to 3rd! 2 doubles, but no runs!

Bottom of the First:
Jeff Schottler takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. He gets caught stealing... Eddie Thomas grounds out to the pitcher. Woody Griesbach grounds a hit past the shortstop into center. Pablo Mateo grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Second:

With 1 out, Tony Casarez and Phil Parker hit singles. Larry Sinchak, who leads the Beavers in grounding into double plays, even though he is only a part-timer, tries to ground into another one, but 3B Tim Roberts boots the ball and the bases are loaded with 1 out. P Tim Wagner strikes out. Jeff Schottler grounds out to short...

Through six innings, we have only 3 hits and no runs...

Bottom of the Seventh:
Tim Segal leads off and takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and out pops their manager to take the ball from P Larry Lee. New Pitcher: Glenn Brown (34-R) with a 2.33 ERA in 27 IP and a 1.00 WHIP. With 1 out, Phil Parker flies out to left and they double Segal off of 1st....

Top of the Ninth:

Still no score in this game and the top of their order is up. Dan Fortino lines a hit to left. Gary Halbert bunts him to 2nd. We walk Sandy Mojica intentionally. Tom Roberts grounds a slow roller to short and is thrown out and the runners move up to 2nd and 3rd. 2 outs. PH Rob Fleeger (25-R) grounds out to 3rd!!!

Bottom of the Ninth:
On the Hill: Jerry Cunningham (34-R), beginning his second inning of work. With 2 outs, Tim Segal swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles to left center. They walk Tony Casarez intentionally to get to Phil Parker, but Parker is pulled down and PH Damien Carr (29-L) is sent up. Now we do NOT want a double steal this time, because then they'd just walk Carr... Carr puts a charge into one to deep left center, but Dan Fortino runs it down...

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
Carr stays in to play 1st, Tony Casarez moves to left and Woody Griesbach moves to right and Dennis Webb is in to catch. P Tim Wagner is at 119 pitches. Clint Graham swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit to center... Bill Giffin bunts him over to 2nd. Chip Carpenter swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to short. PH Marcos Barron (34-R) grounds out to short!!

Bottom of the Tenth:

New Pitcher: Jesse Adcock (30-L), their closer with a 3.06 ERA. Larry Sinchak leads off with a 4 pitch walk. P Tom Wagner bunts him over to 2nd. They walk Jeff Schottler intentionally to get to Eddie Thomas, who has been deadly for us in extra innings.... The first pitch to Thomas is wild and past the catcher and the runners move up to 2nd and 3rd! They do NOT walk Thomas, but bring the infield in. He swings at a 2-1 pitch and lines a hit to left and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!! Third time Eddie Thomas has ended a game this year with a hit to win the game!!!

Won - 1 to 0 in 10 innings

We had 5 whole hits and made no errors
San Francisco had 6 hits and made 1 error

Tom Wagner (W 6-1) went 10 shutout innings (CG), allowed 6 runs, 2 walks, 1 HB and struck out 2. 138 pitches.

Larry Lee went 6+ shutout innings, gave us 3 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit.
LHP Jesse Adcock (L 0-6) got 1 out and gave us 1 run, 1 hit and 2 walks (1 INT). He threw a WP.

CF Jeff Schottler had 3 walks (1 INT). SS Eddie Thomas only had 1 hit, but it won the game! Check this out for a stat: In innings 1-6, Thomas has batted .173 with 9 hits in 52 AB. But from the 7th inning on, he is 14 for 42 (.333) with 8 (!!) doubles and 2 HR. RF Tim Segal hit a double and drew a walk.

The Seattle Rainiers are in Portland to play a 3 game series. They lost 3 of 4 in Los Angeles over the weekend and 6 of their last 7. We are 4-3 against them on the season and swept them in 3 games the first time they were here, May 2-4. They are 10th in scoring in the PCL with 4.10 runs per game (Portland is #2 with 4.81). They are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 5.07 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.18).

Seattle Rainiers (30-40 .429 17.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (49-24 .671 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SEA: Curt Pollard (23-L Major League debut) Rookie vs. POR: Don Panighetti (27-L 7-2 2.44) 2 time All-Star

Pollard is making his Major League debut. At least he is not going on short rest. He does not look like much to me, so we will probably have a hard tome scoring any runs...

Since getting shelled for 6 runs and 10 hits in 4.2 IP and making me think that he was finished as a quality starter, the Spaghetti Man has pitched back-to-back complete games and only allowed 1 total run. His last outing was a 2 hitter.
