The Des Moines Telegraph
Magpies reported to be in talks with Sonos

The Magpies are in talks with George Sonos, the multi-billionaire loudspeaker manufacturer, over a possible investment in the franchise, it emerged today. The septuagenarian, born in Leeds, England, but now a resident of Oakland, California, has reportedly been in confidential discussions with owner Chris Rueda about joining the club’s board. Under SCL statutes, any such agreement would need to be ratified by the SCL Commissioner, but he is thought extremely unlikely to wish to deter or restrict investment in the league’s franchises.

Sonos has long been known as a baseball fanatic, but for many years had focussed exclusively on his business interests. Since turning 70, however, he has been taking a step back from his companies and attempting to take a more active role in the sport. A couple of years ago he was rumoured to be in discussions to take over Major League Baseball outfit the St. Louis Cardinals, but, like with many of the original SCL franchise owners, MLB rebuffed his interest. There was also talk of Sonos taking over at his hometown team, the Leeds Hedgehogs of the English Baseball Association, but if discussions did take place they came to nothing.

Now it seems Sonos is seeking to make a move to the SCL. A Rueda-Sonos deal would certainly provide a real boost for Magpies fans, who have endured several seasons with by far the league’s lowest payroll. GM Billy DePodesta has managed to keep the team in the postseason each year despite those constraints, but would presumably have much greater financial flexibility should Sonos join the franchise. Matchday and merchandising revenue have also been on the rise over the last couple of years, so fans are increasingly hopeful that the club’s years of financial austerity could be set to end. However, neither the club, nor a spokesman for Sonos, would comment on the veracity of the rumours.
