We probably all know the song ... Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath

"In the shuffling madness
Of the locomotive breath,
Runs the all-time loser,
Headlong to his death.

He feels the piston scraping
Steam breaking on his brow
Old Charlie stole the handle and
The train it won't stop going
No way to slow down."

And we all know the greatest teams of 'em all, and for most of us the discussion would start (and probably end) with the 1927 New York Yankees of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Tony Lazzeri and all the others.

But who is the "greatest" loser, the all-time loser? A lot of us would argue that this dubious title belongs to Casey Stengel's 1962 New York Mets, the team that led Stengel to the comment: "I've been in this game one-hundred years, but I see new ways to lose 'em I never knew existed before."

To find out if they indeed are the worst team ever I will use the worst teams of all current MLB franchises over the last 100 years, from 1919 - 2018 according to Baseball-Reference. The tie-breakers are winning percentage, run difference and more runs allowed.

The teams will be put into a bracket and will play best-of-seven Series (2-3-2, the lower seeded team has home-field advantage) with, of course, the loser moving on, the winner dropping out. The Final will be a best-of-nine affair. I will take the roster that comes with OOTPXX Historical Exhibition and won't make any adjustments.

Because we only have 30 teams the two worst teams will have a first-round bye.

Brings back many memories from my Yankees, never said good ones but memories. I know he didn't have a good year and missed time with his back but I'd still rather see Mattingly at 1B instead of Maas

Quite even... after the first two games I was sure that Philadelphia would won easilly...

I guess you can't enter the 19th century teams in a tournament since the Cleveland Spiders aren't there and they are sure deserving of the looser nickname (even if it wasn't the team fault per se since they were kind of used as a minor league team by St. Louis).

Edit: You can call me slow as I just realized that you pick one year for each current MLB teams

Well, at least in Game 7 Maas did everything to help the Yanks to win and get them out of this Loser's Pool

That would be another interesting setup ... letting the worst teams ever play it out.

It really was interesting to really find out the worst teams for each franchise. I was surprised by quite a few of them.
