Steam does update the game to current version when launch. One annoying thing about steam is games you install come default set to automatically update. If you have 100 games in your library, and only play 4 or 5 currently, the other 95 will constantly update themselves in the background whenever there is any new patch release. I change all my Steam titles to update on Launch, but you have to right click each title and manually do so, and remember to do so on any new game. Otherwise some game you have not played in 5 years could be installing a new big huge patch file in the background while your online.
