I love the difficulty and randomness of OOTP in the playoffs

Been playing the game for two years now and I just love how the developers have captured the randomness of the postseason and how you certainly need a bit of luck to win the championship as real teams do in real life. Just like in real life the playoffs in OOTP are a complete crapshoot, whatever team is hot goes the furthest and the best teams rarely end up winning.

Agreed with this

There was a time a few weeks ago, I won 110 games and then got swept in the ALCS lol

My team had the best record in a 64 team league and won the championship after 3 of their 4 postseason series went seven games. They went the distance for 3 rounds of the international tourney too and lost in 6 (of course to a team that had been eliminated from the national tourney). Brutal!

won the NL East after a long, tough season riddled with injuries.

was finally getting healthy & had a fresh Cy Young & MVP winner ready to start the NLDS (with an almost equally dominant DeGrom returning for Game 2).

swept easily in 3 games, wasn't close.

love it.

Playoffs are always a matter of small sample sizes. Within any 7-game stretch even the very best teams (.650 WPct) have a losing record every once in a while, or lose 3 straight. For example, looks at the Astros or Yankees this season, they were extremely hot but then pulled off a 2-8 or 1-9 record in 10 consecutive games. **** happens. That's life.

I've come to find that I have the most playoff success if my players get 'Hot' at the right time just before the playoffs start. Granted, that's something random that can't be controlled but it helps. I had one team where my ace and #2 both were hot and 3 of my hitters. If they are hot too soon before the playoffs start you know they'll cool down soon after the first series starts. I like that part of OOTP because it's very realistic for what we see in real life. Players get hot and can't be stopped for a 2 week stretch sometimes.

One year my Cardinals had a great team, but David Ortiz just smoked them in the playoffs. Oh wait... maybe that was real.

Or when Game 4 ended on that rookie pinch-runner being picked off first base. Please fix, OOTP, no way such stuff happens in baseball!

I just won a wild card game where my ace, Carlos Martinez goes 2 innings allowing 3 runs and Matheny pulls him and goes to the bullpen, electing for a PH during our at bat in the top of the 3rd.

I was thinking I might have to fire Matheny... our bullpen doesn't allow any more runs and we win on a 7th inning HR by Curtis Granderson, a guy past his prime, but I signed him to a minor league deal late in the season due to his leadership abilities.

We won 4-3 and all 4 runs were on solo HR's.

I love this game!!!

Martinez was 16-8 with a 2.43 ERA, the lowest in ERA in the league.

One thing that I have found to be true about baseball is that pitching depth is important during the season, pitching dominance is important in the post season.

In other words, if you only have two strong starting pitchers, the playoffs aren't a realistic expectation. However, a team with two really strong starting pitchers and 2-3 good relievers has all of the tools it needs to make it deep into the playoffs.

I've had teams with great regular season records and I thought we should go all the way. And then I'm swept out of the first round. Then I had teams that I thought were lucky just to make the playoffs and we had no chance, I just wanted to get our elimination over with. A couple of those teams have won the World Series.

I've learned to expect nothing. Just getting to the playoffs can be hard enough. Enjoy the journey, not the destination.

Yep.. I hardly ever win a WS with a dominant team.. I seem to win with a hot team of players that tear it up come postseason.

We beat Noah Syndergaard and the Mets, 7-5 in Game 1 of the NLDS. Noah was 21-4 with an absurd ERA and like 299 K's. In fact, the Mets team as a whole has a scary SP staff.

Kolten Wong ties the game up on a 2 out, 2 run homer in the 9th and then Piscotty wins it with a 2 run bomb in the 10th.

I actually really love this thread and would like to hear about others crazy playoff encounters in OOTP. I just recently, in the 2020 season with my Cubs dynasty, came back down 0-2 in both the NLDS vs the Phils and the NLCS vs the stacked dodgers beating Kershaw in game six, to go on and win the World series in 5 games against the Astros. Also my Ace Carlos Martinez broke his hand a week before the playoffs so I didn't think I had a chance! got hot at the right time ill take it!

We lose game 2 and then game 3 at home, our ace just can't get a W.

Game 4 and Marco Gonzales starts, a SP who has been in the minors all season and hasn't been very good, but I called him up in September and he went 5-0 with a 2.17 ERA. He pitches a gem and our closer gives up the tying run in the top of the 9th.. but in the bottom of the 9th we get a 2 out double from a pinch hit from prospect Jose Adolis Garcia and then Kolten Wong doubles to bring him in to force a game 5!!!

We head back to NY to face "Thor" again.

The Dodgers swept the Cubs so they will not have a chance to win their 3rd in a row.

Oh man I love sharing my misery. My Rays, from a game started in 2012:

2016: First taste of the playoffs. We led 2-1 in the ALDS, and had the lead in the 9th inning of Game 4. Lost that one on a walk-off home run, lost the next game as well.
2017: Swept in the ALDS by an upstart Royals team.
2018: Rematch with the Royals in the ALDS. Trailed 2-1 but had a 6-1 lead going into the 9th inning of Game 4. The top of the 9th went as follows: Single. Walk. Single. E6 on a sure double play ball. Game-tying grand slam. 5 runs without recording an out. Then, top of the 10th, bases loaded again, a hit batsman drives in the go-ahead run.
2020: After a year out of the playoffs, we cruised back into them with the best record in the AL, and actually made it to the ALCS this time... where we ran into the Royals again. We took a 3-2 lead in the series, but fell flat on our face in the final two games to lose again.
2021: First-place team for most of the year until an epic collapse in August/September dropped us to the wildcard game, which we lost thanks to my ace pitcher laying an egg.

We finally won the World Series in 2022, a full 10 seasons after starting (I tend to play out most of my games). But for quite a few years, it was a game of "what crazy way can we lose this season?" On the plus side, it was real fun watching the Rays/Royals rivalry develop.
