He does look impressive and five of those six K's were against good MLB players not spring training fodder.

He sure looks great. Hoepfully he will stay healthy. Reminds me of a young Pedro Martinez.

Have done. Movement is now rated 1 with a potential of 2, control is currently 1 with a potential of 1 and stuff is currently 1 with a potential of 1. Unless he gets traded to the Mets/Dodgers then he'll get a bump to 3 in some areas.

Really depends on the type of league I guess. In a yearly league he is still a later round guy. In Dynasty leagues maybe more of a late mid round pick. I already have him in both of my leagues. One was a new Dynasty league we drafted this year and the other one I have had him for 2+ years already.(Dynasty as well where all players are kept each season)

In the league I drafted this year I got him in round 22 of a 39 round draft (16 minor league spots). However we drafted around the beginning of Spring Training so his value has increased since then.

As a Royals fan, he eases some of the worry about replacing E.Santana… as an OOTP player, I hope my initial post has an impact!

Don't go overboard on him just yet.

The Oliver projection system has him in 2014 with a 4.45 FIP and a 4.55 ERA.

Rookies are never treated well by projections… This one happens to throw 100+ w/ that knee-buckling curve & an above average change up & finds the strike zone w/ each… Plus, he did quite well in his cup of coffee last September… There will be likely be bumps as there always are, but on "stuff", his comps are a young Pedro & probably Strasburg & Harvey as rookies… Hopefully he doesn't have the same injury fate as those last 2, but with that build, it is likely at some point in his career.

That's why I presented the Oliver, because the way it handles MLE's it is widely considered to be the best projection method to use for rookies.

Look up Steamer and ZIPS while you're at it.

What should be done with his teammate Shields? He's been better and has almost 1700 innings of real pitching to back it up. Should all the guys having lousy ST have their ratings factored down? We'd never see a roster set.

Ventura looks good but the Rangers have seen him now. We'll see how things go when the games count.

I would recommend that anyone with a serious interest in the game spend some of their time reading Fangraphs and looking at the data there, especially the player pages. It's a treasure trove if you love baseball.

Of course he doesn't deserve comparable ratings to Shields today, but over time his potential should out-weigh Shields' upside w/ a MUCH higher injury risk… Shields is a workhorse that you can pretty much put down for 220+ IP every season.

Ventura had my curiosity.. now he has my attention.

Near Pedro-esque potential should be expected.
