Career-ending injury: Release pays out contract?

So Dustin Pedroia torn his labrum and retired...

But he's still on my roster, so I figured I should release him, but when I choose that option, I get a warning that I'll still owe him $96M over the course of the next 8 years.

What's the proper sequence of steps for retiring a player?

If it's a CEI, just put him on the 60-day DL. That will take him off your 40-man roster and he will retire at the end of the season.

Or you could just go into commissioner mode and edit the player to be retired, although I've never done that myself.
