It seems like the AI just picks the highest OVR and that is not what I always want. So, to fit what I am trying to do I set my own lineup and depth.

You have to do the lineups yourself. The AI does not take anything into account. Like Kushiro said , It seems to just take the highest rated player card without any thought about platooning or secondary positions. At least for me it is no contest. 😁

I always start by asking the AI to set the lineup but I tweak it the way I want. I do the same with the pitching staff.

In solo play I let my manager do that stuff to save time and make the game more realistic/challenging. And the manager is someone I hired, so in general they're going to think like I do.

In PT I wouldn't let the AI anywhere near my lineup and pitching staff. It can build a basic lineup, but it doesn't understand nuances at all. Plus it undervalues defense (or perhaps I seriously overvalue defense).

I find it a BIG mistake to undervalue defense. 😁

Absolutely, in the infield of course, but especially in some of the big outfields some of these speed teams are using.
