Need help naming teams?

I like my cities to have mascots that say something about the area or the state, as opposed to just random team names with no particular meaning.

Example: Milwaukee Brewers (because Wisconsin is known for beer).

Please make them original also! Don't take ones that are already being used by professional or minor league franchises.

Help me name these 16 cities please!

Fort Wayne, Indiana (Turtles)
Grand Rapids, Michigan (Blue Thunder)

Saint Paul, Minnesota (Steamers)
Madison, Wisconsin (Bees)
Portland, Maine (Traders)
New York, New York (Empires)
Bethlehem, Philadelphia (Shipbuilders)
Lowell, Massachusetts (Millers)
Long Beach, California (Slicks)
Spokane, Washington (Prospectors)
Beaverton, Oregon (Skinners)

Salt Lake City, Utah (Wonders)
Austin, Texas (Vaqueros)
Southhaven, Mississippi (Foxes)
Fort Lauderdale, Florida (Seminoles)
Las Cruces, New Mexico (Whiptails)

Any era you're going for?

I have a few, nothing great but perhaps they can help!

Fort Wayne Shawnee
Saint Paul Farmers
Madison Bees (state insect is the honey bee, bit of a stretch)
Portland Bankers
Bethlehem Shipbuilders or Shipwrights
Lowell Millers (bit unoriginal, but it seems to fit)
Spokane Prospectors or Pioneers
Beaverton Furtraders

New York has so many possibilities, Heights, Skyliners, Hudsons, Empires, Excelsior.

Here are a few ideas for Long Beach...

Long Beach Maritimers (One of the world's largest shipping ports)
Long Beach Pacifics (City sits off the pacific ocean.)
Long Beach Slicks (The city also has a large oil industry.)
Long Beach Nauticals (City began as a seashore town)
Long Beach Galligaskins (Loose fitting trousers worn by sailors. Long Beach has a rich navy history.)
Long Beach Superliners (The Queen Mary permanently docked in Long Beach was considered a superliner.)
Long Beach Voyagers (Reference to Queen Mary ship.)

Now that is an original name for a team. I'd put a team in Long Beach just to name them that.

Thanks for the ideas here guys! These are the ones I'll be keeping.

Madison Bees (really like the sound of this one).
Lowell Millers
Bethlehem Shipbuilders
Long Beach Slicks (So many good ideas, it was hard to choose one!)
Spokane Prospectors
Beaverton Skinners (Came up with this one on my own)

May end up using a few more of Steve's, these were just the ones I am set on.

Let's see if we can get the other ten!

Few more I thought of...

Portland Lobsters, but that seems a bit corny. Perhaps the Portland Traders.
Austin Friars or Missions
Saint Paul Steamers or Steamboats

Southaven I couldn't think of anything, but since they're in Mississippi the Southaven Foxes sounds alright.

By the way, Beaverton Skinners is great.

I'll be using the Steamers and Traders aswell. Really like both of those.

For Austin I was looking for something that represents the state of Texas...Cowboys, Gunslingers, etc. Just not as generic as those two.

EDIT) Salt Lake City will be known as the Wonders, as they have a massive Mormon temple that took 40 years to construct

I always liked Buckaroos for a western nickname.

Hmm... Ranchers or Bisons, but neither of those are very original. I use Oilers for Texas teams but again, not that original.

Salt Lake City is a toughie. Saints fits, but meh... EDIT: Strike that, Wonders is better.

I'll try to find some for the rest.

I really appreciate the help Steve! You've had some good ones.

I've decided to take the Southaven Foxes also.

I'm extremely tempted to change Long Beach to the Galligaskins...we'll see.

Austin Vaqueros

Used chiefly in southwest and central Texas to mean a ranch hand or cowboy, the word vaquero is a direct loan from Spanish; that is, it is spelled and pronounced, even by English speakers, much as it would be in Spanish. In California, however, the same word was Anglicized to buckaroo. Craig M. Carver, author of American Regional Dialects, points out that the two words also reflect cultural differences between cattlemen in Texas and California. The Texas vaquero was typically a bachelor who hired on with different outfits, while the California buckaroo usually stayed on the same ranch where he was born or had grown up and raised his own family there.

I just wanted something unique that kind of emphasizes the big city feel.

For New York...

One name from a failed TV series...

- New York Empires

One from a very successful book series...

- New York Mammoths

Both emphasize bigness.

Fort Wayne Turtles - In 1790, President George Washington ordered the United States Army to secure Indiana. Three battles were fought in Kekionga against Little Turtle and the Miami Confederacy. Miami warriors annihilated the United States Army in the first two battles.
Other names - Tribe, Braves, Rivermen, Pale Sox (i think there is a logo for this somewhere) & Warriors.
New York yeah I would agree on Dream Teams Empires.
Fort Lauderdale Seminoles

I got my info from Wikipedia.

Thanks to everyone for helping me kick-start my new league! I will be managing the Fort Lauderdale Seminoles.

One final request, any good LEAGUE name ideas?
