2048 IPA DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 5

Ruthlandian Union

LUMBERJACKS TOP RATTLERS 5-3, STILL TRAIL 3-2
After losing the first three games of the RU Division Championship Series, Forest City has fought back and captured the last two games from Sugar Valley... in game five the Lumberjacks tallied five runs in the sixth frame to wipe out a three-run deficit... CF Raphael Moyers (.263) belted a two-run single that gave the Lumberjacks a 5-3 victory... starter Omar Cordero (1-1/4.11) notched the win... he was touched for three runs on seven hits in eight and one-third innings... Richie Meyers came in and got the final two outs for the save... Joe Snow (1-1/2/63) was the loser... he worked six frames and allowed five runs on seven hits.

Forest City SS Timmy Tarbell (.211) had two hits, while Richie Fry (.400) had a pair for Sugar Valley... the Rattlers jumped in front 1-0 in the opening frame... Fry doubled and scored on 1B Smokey Nix's (.333) two-bagger... in the fourth SS Pete McCormick (.150) walloped a two-run homer to make it 3-0.

In the five-run sixth, the Lumberjacks got some gift scores... Otto Glintmeyer (.286) singled in the first run... the other two came in on a wild pitch and catcher's interference.

YUDASH KO'S VALMARA 6-2, DIAMONDS ADVANCE
The regular season records and Pro Cup predictions didn't mean anything to the Claxton Diamonds... they may have been a heavy underdog to Valmara, but they didn't play that way... they played like champions and KO'ed the Vipers in just five games to advance to the Ruthlandian League Championship round... Stan Yudash (1-1/5.82) made up for a poor game-two performance by finishing off Valmara 6-2 in game five at Avalon Stadium in Claxton... in a route-going job Yudash permitted only two runs on eight hits with four walks and five Ks... Primo Sirak (1-1/2.25) started for the Vipers but lasted only two innings... he was sacked for six runs on four hits, however only one of them was earned.

The Claxton bats were sparked by rookie LF Whit Miley (.429) with two hits in four tries, three RBIs and two runs scored... Miley homered in the second inning... 1B Jojo DeLucca (.222) drove in two runs for the Diamonds... Valmara had more hits than Claxton, 8 to 6, but stranded 11 baserunners... CF Don Richie (.316), LF Tomek Abramczyk (.444) and 1B Cain Greene (.444) all had a pair of hits in defeat.

Diamond skipper Dixie Baker was elated with the win, "In a short series, you never know who's gonna win... we had a good series, the Vipers didn't... so we won."

Vanya Vasylenko, the Vipers' manager, gave no excuses. "We were fired up for the playoffs... we were coming off a great season with 102 wins... we were actually a stronger team than the 2043 Pro Cup championship team... but we got outplayed."

Tycobbian Union

RASCALS CLIP SUN SOX 2-1 IN 11 ON YARBROUGH HR
Game five in White River was a fan's delight... it was a nail-biter that went 11 innings before 20-year-old rookie Kenny Yarbrough decided it with a fly ball that just barely made the stands 310 feet away... White River prevailed 2-1 over the defending Pro Cup champ Southport to take a three to two edge in the best-of-seven Tycobbian DCS.

Nicky Palmer hurled a brilliant game... and he had to to beat Johnny Swanson... Palmer tossed 10 splendid innings, limited the Sun Sox to just one run on six hits, struck out six and walked only one... Carlo Grimaldi, however, picked up the win... he retired Southport in order in the top of the 11th... Swanson went into the 11th, gave up only two runs and 10 hits and got beat by a little more than a pop fly.

The Rascals were led at the plate by 3B Kenny Yarbrough (.381) and C Josh Groveland (.200) with solo homers each... it was Yarbrough's second roundtripper of the playoffs and seventh RBI... rookie RF Tony Pastrano (.250) drove in the Sun Sox's only score in the sixth frame when he singled in CF Ross Good (.500)... White River had a 10-6 advantage in hits.

REDS ROCK COWBOYS 10-1, WIN SERIES IN 5
High Mesa never had a chance... the Rolling Hills Reds destroyed them 10-1 in game five of the Tycobbian Division Championship Series to win it easily four games to one... the Reds now move to the League Championship round against the winner of Southport-White River series.

The Reds rocked High Mesa for 14 hits with a trio of them driving in a pair of runs each... CF Will Sanders (.316), 2B Miguel Romeros (.188) and 1B Darwin Tard (.285) led the run brigade... RF Vic Scott (.375) was a perfect four-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI.

Rolling Hills got another fine start from Johnny Howard (2-0/0.53), who held the Cowboys to just one run and five hits in his eight innings... Jarrod Coleman came on in the ninth and wrapped up the game with a runless ninth... Howard was also outstanding in game two with a 2-1 victory... the Reds pinned the loss on Lloyd Armstrong, who was bashed for six runs in five innings, but none of them was earned as the Cowpokes committed three errors in the game.

Jack Elliott, the High Mesa manager, told reporters, "We played terrible defense... 12 errors in 5 games... our pitchers never had a chance... no defense and no offense... we didn't hit a lick... 11 runs in 5 games won't cut it... but even if we had played better and hit better, they were still the best team... the Reds beat our butts bad."

The Rolling Hills manager Matty Christianson was beamingly proud of his club. "My pitchers were super... the bats, too... we played very well... it all came together for us this week... I'm looking forward to the next round."

2048 IPA DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 6

Ruthlandian Union

WINSLOW BEATS 'JACKS 2-0, RATTLERS WIN SERIES
Favored Sugar Valley got strong pitching in game six of the Ruthlandian Division Championship Series from Cullen Winslow and Domenico Renterias to eliminate Forest City from the playoffs... the Rattlers won at home 2-0 on homers by Delmer Campbell and Richie Fry off losing pitcher John McKee to capture the series four games to two... it was Campbell's third homer and the first for Fry in the postseason.

McKee gave up only three hits, but two of them went the distance... McKee (0-2/3.38) fanned 11 Rattlers and walked only one in a standout performance... Winslow (2-0/1.69) notched the victory, going eight shutout innings, giving up only five hits with two walks and six strikeouts... Renterias (0-0/2.70/3 saves) got credit for his third save in the series with a perfect ninth frame to close out the game.

Winning skipper Bobby Gamble told the press the keys to victory, "Just like the regular season we relied on strong pitching and homers... Nix and Campbell led the offense with 3 homers each and Cedeno, Snow, Winslow and Renterias did their part on the mound... all total we got 10 home runs."

Losing manager Rich Barstow said, "We just didn't hit... their pitching was just too good for us... and our pitching didn't perform as well as the regular season... but you would expect the competition to get better in the playoffs." Forest City set a new IPA record this year with a 2.51 team ERA... in the playoffs it rose up to 3.46." Barstow also added, "The Rattlers also outgunned us 10 homers to 2."

Sugar Valley will now take on unheralded Claxton for the Ruthlandian Championship... the Diamonds upset Valmara in five games in first round action.

Tycobbian Union

SUN SOX EVEN SERIES, NIP RASCALS 4-3 IN 15TH
With its back to the wall and facing elimination, defending Pro Cup champ Southport won a 15-inning thriller 4-2 over the White River Rascals in game six to knot the Tycobbian DCS at three games each... Ricky Whitaker's bases-loaded single scored Eddy Douglas with the winning run to decide the game and force a seventh game tomorrow afternoon at Pleasure Beach Park in Southport.

White River had more hits 15-13, but came up on the short end of the score... the Sun Sox socked two homers... CF Ross Good (.400) got one in the fifth inning to give Southport a 2-1 margin... and after the Rascals took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 14th, SS Gonzalo Topez got a very crucial home run to tie the score at 3-3... Whitaker (.269) and Topez (.250) led the Sun Sox with three hits each... topping the Rascals at the plate were CF Thomas Young (.278) with five hits in seven at-bats... and LF Billy Joe Hickman (.286) with four hits in seven tries.

Both teams got solid pitching... Southport reliever Wayne Stewart (2-0/0.00) worked a runless 15th for the victory... Hal Combs (0-0/0.00) blanked White River from the fifth through the 10th... and Troy Hill (0-0/1.35/2 saves) worked the 11th through the 14th and held the Rascals to one run... the third Rascal pitcher lost it... Todd Cole (0-2/3.00) went three frames and allowed two runs on four hits... starter Clem Warren (0-1/3.94) worked a sharp game hurling 10 frames and holding the Sun Sox to seven hits and just two runs... Southport starter Brandon Delmore (1-0/3.21) had a shaky start, yielding two runs and six hits in five and two-thirds innings... Delmore struck out seven, but walked five batters.

In tomorrow afternoon's finale it will be Butch Slattery (2-0/1.59) for White River and Billy Hoover (0-2/1.59) for Southport... Slattery was 20-10 with a fine 2.87 ERA in the regular season, while Hoover was 16-7 with a 2.72 ERA... Hoover missed a dozen starts in the year with an injury.

Slattery got the best of Hoover in two tight games... he beat him 3-2 in the opener and 2-1 in game four.

2048 IPA DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 7

Tycobbian Union

SOUTHPORT WINS 13-2 SHOCKER, WINS SERIES
As they have often done in the playoffs, the defending Pro Cup champion Southport Sun Sox rose to the occasion and in a resounding way... they routed the White River Rascals 13-2 in game seven of the Tycobbian DCS to advance to the League Championship Series against the Rolling Hills Reds. Backed up by a 5-run first inning and a 13-hit attack, Billy Hoover (1-2/1.04) stopped the Rascals on just four hits for his first victory in the series... he had lost his first two starts in squeakers to Butch Slattery... Hoover went the distance, struck out three and walked one in the seventh game of the series at Pleasure Beach Park to capture the series 4-3... Southport had to win the last two games of the series... they won in 15 innings in game six to extend the series.

CF Barney Lewis (.286) slammed a 3-run homer and drove in four runs to lead the Sun Sox's hit parade... C Visalis Vlachos (.241) tripled with the bases loaded and drove in four runs all total in the game... and winning pitcher Billy Hoover added three hits and two RBIs to the attack.

It just wasn't Butch Slattery's day... Southport shelled him for eight runs and eight hits in five and one-third innings... it was Slattery's (2-1/4.43) first loss in the series... He had beaten Hoover and the Sun Sox in games one and four.

Hoover cruised through the Rascal batting order... only SS Kunta Burton (.286) gave him trouble with three hits in four tries... the rest of the lineup was putty in his hands... Hoover only needed 91 pitches to knock the Rascals out of the playoffs.

Southport skipper Lorne Evans said, "This was too close for comfort... White River was really, really hard to beat... we are blessed with several players that play their best when everything is on the line... Billy Hoover is one of those players... I don't how many times he has won a 'must win' sixth or seventh game for us in his 10 years with the club."

"I know I'm telling you the obvious... Southport is just about as good as it gets in the IPA," White River manager Mick Cronyn told reporters after a seventh-game loss in the Tycobbian DCS. "They never give up... we had them down three games to two with a lead late in game six and they battled back and forced us to extra innings... we even got another one-run lead in the 14th and couldn't finish them off... they came back again and tied the scored... then won it in the 15th... I'm still proud of my bunch... the season didn't end on a high note, but it was a great season for us... I think Southport will see my Rascals again in the coming seasons."

TWO OF TOP PICKS STILL IN PLAYOFFS
Two of the top picks in the Pro Cup playoffs are still in the running, while two of them bit the dust. Defending Pro Cup titlist and this year's favorite Southpost just barely got by White River in a tense seven-game duel in the first-round play. Third pick Sugar Valley disposed of Forest City in six games. The second choice Valmara Vipers were upset in just five games by the eight-ranked club, the Claxton Diamonds. And the number-four selection High Mesa fell to the fifth pick Rolling Hills four games to one in the first round.

Sugar Valley will host Claxton in a seven-game Ruthlandian Championship Series beginning this Friday afternoon at Farmers Memorial Park, while it will be Rolling Hills and Southport battling at Pleasure Beach Park in Southport for the Tycobbian League Championship.

The Rattlers will carry a strong pitching staff and high-powered offense into the Ruthlandian Series with Claxton. Antonio Cedeno (22-15/2.31), Cullen Winslow (18-7/2.47) and Joe Snow (19-4/2.29) head up very inpressive starting rotation with help in the bullpen from closer Domenico Renterias (13-9/2.35/10 saves). Sugar Valley will be led at the plate by CF Carl Ramsey (.252/38/108/98), RF Bobby Gamble (.289/17/71/65), 1B Walt Hanson (.311/18/77/62), 2B Richie Fry (.305/11/39/80), LF Jeff Harvey (.258/25/73/60) and 3B Roger Hobbs (.249/21/75/81).

The Claxton Diamonds will counter with a pretty fair offense featuring 1B Jojo DeLucca (.279/30/126/91), LF Whit Miley (.357/14/72/106), CF Darry Daniels (.295/12/55/88), 3B Rick Clayburne (.323/9/76/74) and 2B Rich Emery (.252/19/78/81). The Diamonds will have their ace Abe Schiffman (21-13/2.80) back back in the rotation. He missed the entire series with Valmara because of a five-game suspension incurred in the final days of the regular season. Stan Yudash (20-9/3.48) and Gilbert Clagsdale (16-12/3.84) will be number two and three in the postseason rotation. The top relievers will be Steven Ellison (18-9/3.79), Jared Lipton (11-6/2.71/9 saves) and Gary Haskin (5-8/2.95/16 saves).

RUTHLANDIAN FORECAST: Sugar Valley has too much pitching and firepower for the Diamonds... the Rattlers will win in six games.

The Southport Sun Sox are blessed with a wealth of hurlers, both starters and bullpen... Billy Hoover (16-7/2.72), Johnny Swanson (22-11/2.41) and Brandon Delmore will get the starting calls, while Gordon Forbes (26-10/3.64), Troy Hill (7-3/2.18/18 saves) and Hal Combs (4-7/3.23/8 saves) will be the go-to guys in the pen. Southport has a very solid core of hitters, too. The top guns are 1B Eddy Douglas (.340/26/93/88), rookie RF Tony Patrano (.280/32/92/85), C Vasilis Vlachos (.285/19/94/81), 2B Ricky Whitaker (.319/10/87/72), Craig Glennon (.267/21/82/71) and CF Barney Lewis (.247/25/62/60).

The Rolling Hills Reds rolled past a very good High Mesa club in round one. They did it without Golden Glove RF and slugger Jimbo Foxx (.247/37/100/75), the main threat in the lineup. Foxx will miss about four months with a serious hand injury. Sharp-fielding shortstop and leading hitter Dustin Thibodeau (.322/18/65/101) will also be out for the first few games with the Sun Sox due to a hamstring problem. Hoping to take up the slack will be star 1B Darwin Tard (.294/30/94/100), LF Orin Phillips (.300/24/95/87) and 2B Miguel Romeros (.288/19/65/61). Trying to hold the Sun Sox at bay will be starters Matthew Christianson (22-11/2.19), Johnny Howard (18-12/2.60) and Steve Adams (17-11/3.59). The main relievers will be Marty Phillips (14-14/3.76), Andy Bennett (11-5/3.83/4 saves) and Benny Young (9-5/2.37/15 saves).

TYCOBBIAN FORECAST: It's hard to go against Southport... they are solid in all respects... they should win in six games over a fine Rolling Hills team... the Reds can't quite match the Sun Sox starters... nor can they keep up with Southport in the scoring department... Rolling Hills will really miss the big bat of Jimbo Foxx.

2048 IPA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 1

Ruthlandian Union

CLAXTON CRUSHES RATTLERS 12-3 IN OPENER
Lightly-regarded Claxton opened up the Ruthlandian LCS with a bang... the Diamonds massacred Sugar Valley 12-3 in the opening game of the series... Abe Schiffman (1-0/3.00) put a lid on the Ratters, holding them to six hits and three runs... he fanned six batters and walked two in a route-going job... Antonio Cedeno (1-2/4.67) was clobbered for eight hits and eight runs and was gone in the fourth frame, when the Diamonds posted seven runs.

Claxton star 1B Jojo DeLucca (.318) rapped three hits, drove in four runs and scored twice to lead the 12-hit attack... LF Whit Miley (.458), 2B Rich Emery (.053) and SP Abe Schiffman (.250) each batted in two runs... and four players posted two hits apiece: CF Darryl Daniels (.280), SS Stevie Wynn (.500), LF Whit Miley (.458) and 3B Rick Clayburne (.360).

LF Jeff Harvey (.250) went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs to pace Sugar Valley... RF Bobby Gamble (.217) also homered.

Tycobbian Union

REDS ROLL TO 6-3 WIN OVER SUN SOX IN GAME 1
On the road in Southport's Pleasure Beach Park, the visiting Rolling Hills Reds rolled to a 6-3 victory in game one of the Tycobbian League Championship Series over the defending Pro Cup champion Sun Sox.

Three pitchers checked Southport on six hits with the win going to starter Matthew Christianson (2-1/1.29), who chunked the first six frames, yielding two runs on five hits with 5 Ks and a couple of walks... Marty Phillips (0-0/0.00) worked a runless seventh inning and Benny Young closed it out for his second save in the postseason... Young (0-0/2.25/2 saves) allowed one unearned run in his two innings... the Reds walked six batters... Southport had a lot of baserunners, but left 11 on.

The Reds tagged the loss on Billy Hoover (1-3/1.54), who was the victim of shoddy defense... Hoover allowed six runs, but only three of them were earned... the Sun Sox defense committed three errors... Hoover worked a complete game... Rolling Hills also made three miscues and gave up two unearned runs.

Rolling Hills was sparked by RF Vic Scott (.421) with 2-3, including a triple, two runs scored and an RBI... CF Will Sanders (.292) doubled in a run and score twice... and 2B Miguel Romeros (.200) and C Kyle Edwards (.280) also drove in one run apiece... the Reds walked six batters... Southport had a lot of baserunners, but left 11 on... 1B Eddy Douglas (.273) collected two hits and batted in a run for the Sun Sox... and CF Ross Good (.379) had two hits and scored a run.

2048 IPA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 2

Ruthlandian Union

RATTLERS EVEN SERIES, SMASH DIAMONDS 8-1
Favored Sugar Valley took a bashing in game one from underdog Claxton, but the Rattler bats were booming in game two... they walloped four roundtrippers and won going away 8-1 to even the Ruthlandian LCS at one game apiece... superstar player-manager Bobby Gamble went deep twice and got longball help from Roger Hobbs and Carl Ramsey, who hit solo salvos... Cullen Winslow (3-0/1.59) and three other relievers held the Diamonds to just one run and six hits... Winslow was the winner, giving up only one run on five hits in six and two-thirds innings, while fanning eight batters and walking two... Chris Dunsberry (0-0/0.00), Domenico Renterias (0-0/2.25/3 saves) and Alan Montreuil (0-0/0.00) got the final seven outs... Stan Yudash (1-2/6.93) took the loss, getting rocked for eight runs and 11 hits in seven and two-thrd frames... Yudash kept the score close 3-1 until the Rattlers let loose with five runs in the eighth.

RF Gamble (.269), 3B Hobbs (.259) and CF Ramsey (.258) all had two hits each... Gamble drove in three runs and 2B Richie Fry (.313) batted in a pair... LF Jeff Harvey (.417) went 3-4 and scored a run... Gamble has hit four out of the park in this postseason... 1B Jojo DeLucca (.308) doubled in Claxton's only score in the opening inning... DeLucca has 10 RBIs in the playoffs this year.

Tycobbian Union

REDS PREVAIL AGAIN IN GAME 2, DUMP SOX 7-4
Southport, the defending Pro Cup champ, is in trouble... Rolling Hills whipped them for the second day in a row, knocking off the Sun Sox 7-4... a six-run second inning was all Johnny Howard needed to defeat Southport... it wasn't a thing of beauty, but Howard (3-0/1.73) did a fair job in holding the Sun Sox to four runs and nine hits in a complete-game outing... he struck out five and walked four... not only have the Reds won the first two games of the best-of-seven series, they have easily handled Southport's best two pitchers, Billy Hoover and Johnny Swanson.

Luckily for Howard the Reds had enough punch to do away with the Sun Sox... they slapped loser Johnny Swanson (0-2/5.48) for all seven runs in five innings... LF Orin Phillips (.179) topped the Reds with two RBIs, while CF Will Sanders (.310) and SS Chris Hicks (.625) each had two hits and scored a run... Southport picked up nine hits and was led by CF Ross Good (.382) with two hits, including his second homer of the playoffs...LF Chris Jones (.192) and 1B Eddy Douglas (.289) also garnered a pair of hits apiece.

RATTLERS ROCK DIAMONDS WITH 3 HRS 9-3
For the second day in a row, the big bats of the Sugar Valley Rattlers put it to the Claxton Diamonds to take a 2-1 edge in the Ruthlandian League Championship Series... the Rattlers cracked three home runs in the 9-3 thrashing... that gave them seven homers in two days... Roy Hobbs hammered a three-run shot in the seventh that broke open a tight 4-3 game... Joe Snow (2-1/2.78) went the distance for the victory, scattering nine hits and three runs... Gilbert Clagsdale (1-1/5.28) went down to defeat, being tagged for six runs and eight hits in six-plus frames, leaving the game behind 6-3.

Sugar Valley rapped 13 hits in all with LF Jeff Harvey (.471) going 3-5, scoring twice and driving across a pair of scores, 3B Roger Hobbs (.281) socked two hits and drove in three, RF Bobby Gamble (.290) was 2-5 with two runs and an RBI and C Delmer Campbell (.258) had two hits and two RBIs... Gamble got his fifth postseason homer, Hobbs his third and Harvey his second... Campbell now leads the club with 9 runs batted in.

1B Jojo DeLucca (.367) paced Claxton with three hits in four tries, two RBIs and a run scored... DeLucca hit his first playoff homer and now has 12 RBIs, tops in the postseason... CF Darryl Daniels (.355) also chipped in with 3-4 and two runs scored... and rookie LF Whit Miley (.438) went 2-4 and drove in a run.

Tycobbian Union

REDS NEAR SWEEP, ROCK SOX 7-2
Seven straight postseason wins... the Rolling Hills Reds are really rolling... after taking four in a row to finish off High Mesa in round one... for the third successive game they have disposed of the the powerful Southport Sun Sox in relatively easy fashion... the Reds backed up solid pitching by Steve Adams with 15 hits and rocked the defending Pro Cup titlist 7-2... a five-run first gave Adams (2-0/3.00) all the runs he needed... he stopped the Sox on just two runs and eight hits, went the route, struck out five batters and walked two.

The top bats for Rolling Hills were C Kyle Edwards (.344) and SS Chris Hicks (.615) each with three hits in five at-bats... CF Will Sanders (.324), RF Vic Scott (.407) and 2B Randy Watling (.278) all added two hits apiece to the attack... Southport starter Brandon Delmore (1-1/5.79) didn't make it out of the first inning... he was shelled for four runs and four hits and didn't get an out... Delmore departed due to an injury.

2048 IPA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 4

Ruthlandian Union

RATTLERS EDGE DIAMONDS 5-4 FOR 3-1 LEAD
Sugar Valley moved closer to the Pro Cup Finals by whipping Claxton for the third game in a row... the Rattlers' 5-4 triumph put them within one victory of claiming the Ruthlandian Union league title... Sugar Valley leads the best-of-seven series three games to one.

Antonio Cedeno (2-2/4.60) guttied out the win, giving up 10 hits and four runs, but went the distance... Claxton's ace Abe Schiffman (1-1/3.71) was the losing pitcher... in an uneven outing he struck out nine batters in eight innings, but surrendered five runs, eight hits and three bases on balls.

Sugar Valley got all their runs in the five-run fourth frame... LF Jeff Harvey (.429) got them started with a two-run blast, his third roundtripper in the postseason... C Delmer Campbell (.257), 2B Richie Fry (.325) and 3B Roger Hobbs (.270) made it 5-0 with RBI singles... the Rattlers had nine hits in all.

Claxton collected 10 hits and were sparked by 2B Rich Emery (.065) with a pair of RBIs... CF Darryl Daniels (.321), rookie LF Whit Miley (.444) and RF Roger Jackson (.182) added two hits apiece to the Diamond attack.

Tycobbian Union

REDS SWEEP SUN SOX, PRO CUP BOUND
Rolling Hills rolled over the defending IPA champion Southport Sun Sox in four games to capture the Tycobbian Union league title and advance to the Pro Cup Finals against the Ruthlandian champion, either Sugar Valley or Claxton... Vic Scott boomed a 400-foot homer in the bottom of the 12th at the Midtown Base Ball Grounds to sink the Sun Sox 4-3.

Matthew Christianson and Marty Phillips teamed up to beat Southport... Christianson started and went eight and two-thirds innings, but didn't get the decision... he left with the scored tied at 3-all... Southport got seven hits off of him... Christianson posted 9 Ks and walked three... in a flawless performance Phillips (1-0/0.00) retired all 10 men he faced, striking out three of them for the win.

Billy Hoover kept the Sun Sox in the game, permitting three runs on seven hits in his eight innings, fanning five and walking nobody... Hal Combs (0-1/1.17) was the loser... he gave up one run on three hits in three and one-third innings... Combs struck out three and walked one batter.

SS Dustin Thibodeau (.375) returned to action after missing the last four playoff games with a bad hamstring... Thibodeau socked three hits and drove in three runs for the Reds... one of his hits was a 2-run clout that tied the game in the last of the fifth... RF Vic Scott (.406) and 1B Darwin Tard (.270) added two hits each to the Rolling Hills' offense... 1B Eddy Douglas (.277) paced the Sun Sox with two RBIs... and 2B Ricky Whitaker (.261) chipped in with two base hits.

Optimism abounds in the Rolling Hills' locker room. "After 17 years, it'll be nice to get another shot at the Pro Cup," Reds' manager Matty Christianson told the press. "We played very, very well in beating a very, very good team... We're ready, willing and able to win our third Pro Cup."

Lorne Evans in his second season at the helm of the Southport Sun Sox was disappointed that his club lost. "I thought this was our year, especially after we came back against White River in the first round... we have no excuses... the Reds outplayed us and took all four games... I think they will do well in the Finals and bring the IPA title home to Tycobbia."

2048 IPA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 5

Ruthlandian Union

CLAXTON HANGS IN, WINS 5-4 IN 14 INNINGS
Hanging in by the skin of their teeth, the Claxton Diamonds staved off elimination from the Ruthlandian LCS in game five with a dramatic 5-4 decision over the Sugar Valley Rattlers at home at Avalon Stadium... the win cut the Rattlers' lead down to 3-2 in the best-of-seven series... Ryne Akins singled in Jojo DeLucca from third in the last of the 14th inning for the winning score... DeLucca got new life leading off the inning when third baseman Roger Hobbs booted his groundball.

In a seesaw affair Claxton took a 3-0 lead after three innings, but Sugar Valley came back and tied it up at 3-3 in the eighth... the Rattlers went up 4-3 in the top of the 11th, but the Diamonds rallied and knotted it up again in the bottom half of the inning, then finally won it in the 14th.

Both clubs got excellent relief work from the bullpens... Claxton's Gilbert Clagsdale (1-1/4.42) pitched two perfect frames in the 9th and 10th... and winner Gary Haskin (1-0/1.69) held the Rattlers to one run and four hits in the final four innings... Chris Dunsberry (0-0/0.00) blanked the Diamonds for four innings, departing after the 10th... Domenico Renterias (0-0/2.57/3 saves) blew a save when he allowed a run in the 11th, but he stopped Claxton in the 12th and 13th... Davy Brennan (0-1/2.16) was the losing pitcher... he gave up one unearned run in the fatal 14th.

Both starters did fair work... Claxton's Stan Yudash (1-2/6.06) tossed eight innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and four walks... Sugar Valley's Cullen Winslow (3-0/2.20) went six frames and permitted three runs on eight hits, walking five and fanning two.

Claxton posted 12 hits in the game with C Ryne Akins (.211) and rookie LF Whit Miley (.442) leading the way with three hits and 2 RBIs apiece... 1B Jojo DeLucca (.333) went 2-for-5, scored the winning run and drove in a run... SS Pete McCormick (.205) had three hits and two RBIs for the Rattlers... and C Delmer Campbell (.268) smacked two hits and drove in two runs.

The Diamonds will try to even the series at three games each tomorrow afternoon in Sugar Valley at Farmers Memorial Park... the Rattlers are 4-1 at home in the playoffs, while Claxton is 2-2 on the road... Steven Ellison (18-9/3.79) gets the assignment for the Diamonds and it'll be Joe Snow (19-4/2.29) for Sugar Valley... it will be Ellison's first start in the playoffs this season... he has made only one poor relief appearance so far... Ellison is 0-0 with a sky-high 10.13 ERA in two innings of relief... Snow has done well with a 2-1 mark in three starts with a fine 2.78 ERA... he beat the Diamonds 9-3 in game three at Claxton.

2048 IPA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 6

Ruthlandian Union

CLAXTON FORCES 7TH GAME WITH 8-4 WIN
It was clutch time for the Claxton Diamonds and their superstar Jojo DeLucca and they proved their mettle with an 8-4 triumph over favored Sugar Valley in game six of the Ruthlandian League Championship Series at the Rattlers' home field, Farmers Memorial Park... DeLucca pounded two out of the park and drove in five runs and the Diamonds forced a seventh-game showdown with Sugar Valley... the victor will get a spot opposite the Rolling Hills Reds of the Tycobbian Union in the IPA Pro Cup Finals.

Claxton starter Steven Ellison (1-0/5.06) turned in a decent performance, allowing four runs on six hits, striking out seven and walking two in his eight innings... one of the runs was not earned... Cliff Yarbrough (1-0/4.50) closed out the game with a scoreless ninth... Sugar Valley starter Joe Snow (2-2/3.52) wasn't very effective... he gave up six runs and eight hits in his eight innings and caught the loss.

LF Jeff Harvey (.419) gave the Rattlers an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI single... the Diamonds came right back in the same inning with three runs on an RBI single by LF Whit Miley (.438) and a two-run blast by 1B Jojo DeLucca (.372)... the score remained 3-1 until the Rattlers' fifth when SS Pete McCormick (.195) cut it to 3-2 by stealing third and coming in on a throwing error by catcher Ryne Akins... DeLucca's solo shot in the sixth gave Claxton a 4-2 margin... the Rattlers tied it up 4-4 their half of the sixth on 1B Smokey Nix's (.250) two-run homer... C Ryne Akins (.261) redeemed himself for the error and came through in the seventh with an RBI single, putting the Diamonds in front 5-4... Claxton wrapped up the game with three more scores in the ninth... SS Stevie Wynn (.316) got one run in with a deep fly sacrifice and DeLucca cracked a two-run single.

DeLucca (.372) sparked the Diamonds' 11-hit attack with three hits, two runs and five RBIs... DeLucca now has 18 RBIs in the playoffs this year and is within 5 of the record held by Southport's Barney Lewis, set in 2044... CF Darryl Daniels (.341) scored two runs... LF Whit Miley (.438) and C Ryne Akins (.261) each had two hits, scored a run and drove one in... rookie Miley now has 13 ribbies in the postseason... LF Jeff Harvey (.419) had three of the six hits for the Rattlers... and Nix (.250) drove in two runs with his fourth postseason smash.

Both clubs will have their number one starters on the hill in the series finale... Abe Schiffman (21-13/2.80) goes for Claxton and Antonio Cedeno (22-15/2.31) will be on the mound for Sugar Valley... they have faced each other twice in the series and split... Schiffman took the opener 12-3 in Sugar Valley, while Cedeno won game four 5-4 in Claxton. Game seven will be played at Farmers Memorial Park in Sugar Valley. In the postseason Schiffman is 1-1 in 2 starts with a 3.71 ERA and Cedeno is 2-2 in 4 starts with a 4.60 ERA.

2048 IPA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES - Game 7

Ruthlandian Union

CINDERELLA CLAXTON COPS BERTH IN PRO CUP FINALS
The unheralded Claxton Diamonds are apparently for real... just ask the Valmara Vipers and Sugar Valley Rattlers... a Pro Cup longshot at best, the Diamonds have now disposed of the number two and three picks to win the Pro Cup... they toppled Sugar Valley 3-2 in game seven of the Ruthlandian League title series to cop an unexpected berth in the IPA Pro Cup Finals against the fifth-ranked Rolling Hills Reds of the Tycobbian Union, who conquered the fourth-rated High Mesa Cowboys and the top-ranked Southport Sun Sox.

The Diamonds were down 3-1 in the series, but came back to win the final three games, two of them on Sugar Valley's home ground... In game seven played at Farmers Memorial Park in Sugar Valley, Diamond ace Abe Schiffman (2-1/2.42) bested the Rattlers' best Antonio Cedeno (2-3/4.23) in a sharp pitchers' duel... Schiffman only allowed two runs and both of them were unearned, stopping the heavy-hitting Rattlers on just five hits... Schiffman fanned five and walked only one in an outstanding complete game... Cedeno also went all the way, yielding three runs on seven hits, while walking three and striking out three.

C Ryne Akins (.259) put Claxton ahead 1-0 in the first with an RBI single that scored RF Roger Jackson (.200)... four innings later they made it 3-0 when SS Stevie Wynn (.310) doubled in Schiffman (.300) and CF Darryl Daniels (.340)... Schiffman held the Rattlers at bay until the ninth when they cut it to 3-2 and had the winning runs on second and third with two outs... Schiffman got out of it when SS Pete McCormick (.178) lined out to second base... LF Jeff Harvey's (.400) two-run double was the big blow of the short-lived rally.

Claxton skipper Dixie Baker told reporters, "I can't say enough about Schiffman... when we need it he also picks us up and carries us... he was mighty good today in game seven." He added, "It's unbelievable what we have done... beating Sugar Valley three straight after trailing 3-1 in the series is remarkable... Today we got fine pitching, but it was our hitting that won the series... Jojo has been great... and Whit and Darryl have been special, too."

Superstar Jojo DeLucca is hitting .362 in the playoffs with 3 HRs and 18 RBIs... he has a fair shot at setting a new IPA RBI mark... Barney Lewis of Southport holds the record with 23 set in 2044... rookie phenom LF Whit Miley is batting .412 this postseason with 2 roundtrippers and 13 RBIs... and CF Darryl Daniels has hit .340 with 16 runs scored.

Bobby Gamble, playing manager for the Rattlers commended the Diamonds, "They have a tough lineup to get through... it was their bats that beat us... our starting pitching was spotty and the Diamonds took advantage of it."

GURUS FAVOR REDS IN PRO CUP FINALS
The Pro Cup Finals are just around the corner, coming up this Sunday afternoon... game one will be at the Midtown Base Ball Grounds in Rolling Hills with Claxton providing the opposition... both finalists in the Pro Cup playoffs have been impressive in the postseason thus far... both the Claxton Diamonds and Rolling Hills Reds upset more highly-rated clubs to get here... Claxton is the Cinderella club and was voted least likely to win the Pro Cup trophy this year, chosen number eight and last in the postseason poll... Rolling Hills got a little more respect and were ranked number five in the voting. The Reds are 8-1 in the playoffs so far, while the Diamonds are 8-4... the Reds get the homefield advantage because of the better record in the season... they were 95-59, while the Diamonds were 92-62... this year's postseason has been very evenly matched... all of the eight playoffs squads were solid clubs.

The baseball gurus have come out favoring the Reds in the IPA finale, a best-of-seven series for baseball supremacy in the Islands... the experts cite superior pitching as the deciding factor... Rolling Hills posted a standout 2.96 ERA during the season, while Claxton put up a modest 3.40 team ERA... both teams can score and play good defense... the Reds get the edge in home-run power.

PRO CUP FORECAST: Rolling Hills in six games... they get the edge in starting rotation... the trio of Matthew Christianson (22-11/2.19), Johnny Howard (18-12/2.60) and lefty Steve Adams (17-11/3.59) is favored to get the best of Abe Schiffman (21-13/2.71), Jared Lipton (11-6/2.71) and Stan Yudesh (20-9/3.48)... manager Dixie Baker of Claxton moved Lipton into the starting role in place of Steven Ellison (18-9/3.79) because the Reds don't do very well against portsiders... they were only 19-17 against left-handers in the regular season.

Both Pro Cup Finalists blistered the ball in the opening game of the IPA Pro Cup Series totaling 35 hits between them... favored Rolling Hills rolled to a 12-8 slugfest win over visiting Claxton at the Midtown Base Ball Grounds... the Reds won it in the 11th on a grand slam homer by Will Sanders... Rolling Hills had to come back from a 6-0 score early in the game... the Reds rallied to take the lead 7-6 in the seventh on Orin Phillips' three-run clout, only to blow the lead in the eighth, forcing extra innings... they also trailed 8-7 going into the bottom of the 11th before stunning the Diamonds for their eighth straight postseason victory... the Reds have rattled off nothing but wins since losing the opening game of the first round.

Rolling Hills collected 15 hits, but were still outhit by Claxton, who socked 20... the Reds used five pitchers with the win going to Whizzer Whatley (1-0/4.50), though he allowed one run in his two innings... coming on in the last of the 11th to protect a one-run lead and save the game, Gilbert Clagsdale (1-2/5.79) gave up the game-winning blast for the loss and he blew the win.

The Reds big bang brigade was led by CF Will Sanders (.295) with his decisive grand slam... LF Orin Phillips (.209) added three hits and three RBIs... 3B Gene Winston (.333) chalked up two hits, drove in three and scored twice in the game... 1B Darwin Tard (.310) contributed three hits and three runs... and SS Dustin Thibodeau (.364) and RF Vic Scott (.396) socked a pair of hits apiece and scored a run.

2048 IPA PRO CUP FINAL SERIES - Game 2

REDS RALLY IN 9TH FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN
For the second game in a row Rolling Hills pulled off a last-ditch rally to go up two games to none in the Pro Cup Finals... the Reds scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to overcome a 4-3 Claxton lead... Yancy Yokum doubled in the tying run and then scored on an RBI single by Darwin Tard to down the Diamonds 5-4 in game two of the series... this was Rolling Hill's ninth triumph in a row in the playoffs... after two games at the Midtown Base Ball Grounds in Rolling Hills, the site will change to Avalon Stadium in Claxton for the next three contests, if they are needed in the best-of-seven series.

Johnny Howard (4-0/2.31) won his fourth postseason game, but was lackluster doing it... Howard was tagged for 12 hits and four runs, but went the route, struck out three and walked four... southpaw Jared Lipton (1-1/4.38) also worked a complete game, but wasn't very effective... he permitted five runs on 11 hits, fanned three and walked two.

CF Yancy Yokum (.375) paced Rolling Hills with three hits in four at-bats, scored a run and drove one in... LF Orin Phillips (.239) went 2-3 and scored a run... C Kyle Edwards (.311) batted in two runs for the Reds... and RF Vic Scott (.381) had a solo homer and drove in two runs... it was his third roundtripper of the playoffs.

CF Darryl Daniels (.375) led the Diamonds with two RBIs... and SS Stevie Wynn (.288) and LF Whit Miley (.419) contributed an RBI each.

CF Darryl Daniels (.367) put Claxton up in the first with a lead-off homer... LF Whit Miley (.424) made it 4-2 with a two-run shot in the fifth... and RF Roger Jackson (.260) finished off the scoring with a solo clout in the sixth that completed the day's scoring.

2048 IPA PRO CUP FINAL SERIES - Game 4

CHRISTIANSON BLANKS DIAMONDS 2-0, REDS UP 3-1
It was a lot different this time around... the pitchers lived up to their reputations... Matthew Christianson edged Abe Schiffman in game four of the IPA Pro Cup Finals 2-0 on a five-hitter to give the Rolling Hills Reds a three games to one lead in the series over the Claxton Diamonds...... this was quite a change from the 12-8 slugfest in their previous encounter between the two aces in game one... In a stellar outing Christianson (3-1/2.42) struck out three and walked only one batter... in his eight frames Schiffman (2-2/3.54) only allowed two solo homers among the six hits, while fanning 10 and walking just one.

Rolling Hills RF Vic Scott (.388) crushed his fourth postseason homer in the top of the third inning and 2B Miguel Romeros (.194) ripped another one in the eighth... that was all the scoring... Romeros and 1B Darwin Tard (.291) got two hits each in the win... rookie LF Whit Miley (.429) and 1B Jojo DeLucca (.355) had two hits apiece for the Diamonds.

2048 IPA PRO CUP FINAL SERIES - Game 5

REDS WIN THIRD PRO CUP, KOs CLAXTON IN 5 GAMES
Rolling Hills is the champion of the Islands for the third time in its history... the Reds defeated Cinderella Claxton 6-4 in game five of the Pro Cup Finals at Avalon Stadium in Claxton to KO the Diamonds in just five games... the Reds backed up Johnny Howard with 13 hits to send Claxton home for the year... Howard (5-0/2.66) went all the way and won his fifth victory of the playoffs, though he was touched for four runs and seven hits... Darwin Tard paced the Reds' attack with a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate... Tard homered and drove in a pair of runs... in a subpar outing Jared Lipton (1-2/5.23) suffered the loss, going six and one-third innings and allowing six runs on 13 hits... Rolling Hills also captured Pro Cup trophies in 2029 and 2031.

Rolling Hills built up a 6-2 in the first five frames and then held off Claxton's belated rally... 1B Darwin Tard (.339) sparked the Reds with four hits, while 3B Gene Winston (.327) and 2B Randy Watling (.259) chipped with two hits apiece... Claxton rookie sensation LF Whit Miley (.446) went 3-for-4 to led the Diamonds and C Ryne Akins (.233) chipped in with a solo homer.

Matty Christianson, longtime Reds' manager, saluted his mound corps. "We are blessed with some very fine pitchers... Johnny and Matthew won eight of their 11 starts and only lost one of them... and our offense came through when we needed it... everyone in the lineup contributed at one time or another in the playoffs... Vic, Gene and Darwin especially stood out." Christianson has been at the helm for all three Pro Cup titles.

In the postseason Johnny Howard (5-0/2.66) and Matthew Christianson (3-1/2.42) led the pitching staff, while the bat leaders were RF Vic Scott (.377/4/8/16), 3B Gene Winston (.327/3/14/13) and 1B Darwin Tard (.339/1/9/8).

Losing skipper Dixie Baker told reporters, "I'm disappointed in losing the Pro Cup, but not disappointed in the season... my Diamonds made a heck of a good run, but we just ran into a team with some very fine pitchers... Christianson and Howard were really tough the last two games." Baker added praise for his hitters, "Miley, DeLucca and Daniels really excelled in the playoffs this year."

Rookie phenom and LF Whit Miley had a fantastic postseason with a .446 BA, 6 doubles, one triple, 3 homers, 20 RBIs and 11 runs scored... superstar 1B Jojo DeLucca hit .344 with 6 doubles, 3 homers and 20 RBIs... and CF Darryl Daniels scored 20 runs and batted .353 in the playoffs.

In a rarity, this year's IPA Pro Cup Most Valuable Player didn't play for the winning team. Claxton's rookie phenom Whit Miley became the second player in history to do it. Rolling Hills got the team title trophy, while Miley picked up the MVP trophy. The only other time this happened was in the 2030 Pro Cup when pitcher Teddy Lem of the Valmara Vipers captured the honor. The Vipers were beaten in the Finals by Blue Lake Blue Sox in seven games. Lem posted a sparkling 6-1 record with a 2.37 ERA.

Miley, a rookie left fielder, hit an amazing .446 and collected 33 hits, 6 doubles, one triple, 3 home runs, 20 RBIs and scored 13 times in a great postseason. During the regular season Miley finished second in the IPA with a marvelous .357 BA with 196 hits, 14 HRs, 72 RBIs and 106 runs. He also walked 109 times. The 20-year-old standout freshman will be a prime contender for the Ruthlandian Rookie of the Year Award.

Three other players received support in the Pro Cup MVP poll. Johnny Howard was second in the balloting. The Rolling Hills' right-hander posted a 5-0 record in the playoffs in 5 starts with a fine 2.66 ERA. Howard's mound teammate Matthew Christianson came in third in the voting. He was 3-1 in 6 postseason starts with a very impressive 2.42 ERA. Finishing fourth was Claxton superstar first baseman Jojo DeLucca, who batted .344 in the playoffs with 3 roundtrippers and 20 RBIs.

MILEY (MVP) * Howard (2nd) * Christianson (3rd) * DeLucca (4th)
