Mel Stottlemyre

RIP Mel, you're a Yankee legend and more.

Stottlemyre could have been a hall of famer if he spent his career on better teams. As it is, don't ask me for the definition of a true Yankee but he was one of them. Bye, Mel, and thanks for the memories.

I think you forgot: "...and a torn rotator cuff hadn't ended his career during his age 32 season". He might well have put himself in the conversation to become a HoFer despite said bad teams had he not been cut down. He didn't have a tremendous peak, but it was very good, so he would've needed longevity to get there, but the shoulder ended that possibility. He was also a pretty decent hitter...for a pitcher.

Who knows what would've happened had he not been hurt? He would definitely have needed more volume to be considered. Like about six seasons at the level he pitched at for his first ten. Still a very good career. Nothing to sneeze at.

RIP to one of the good guys.

I'd put him in the Coaching Hall (if there were such a place) - he earned that spot.
