GM’s notebook - Series 32 and 33

Madison 0-6 Magpies
Madison 6-3 Magpies
Madison 2-0 Magpies
Denver 2-5 Magpies
Denver 4-11 Magpies
Denver 3-0 Magpies

- Tom Hart has been so good since he joined us. He threw 8 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 K to win game one against Madison. This is an important series and that was a great win.
- Concord’s all-star SP Santiago Rivera damaged an elbow ligament and will be out for a year. Tough break.
- Robinson Ortíz’s erratic form continued. He was dreadful in the second Madison game: 6 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 4 BB.
- Al Harper (12-4, 1.37) shut our offense down in the rubber game - we managed only 4 hits.
- Shortstop Eric Warner has been hot at the plate this month. His first home run of the season put us ahead in the 4th inning of the home opener against the Snox Sox. Ken James (1.43 ERA) got his 15th save.
- António Fernández, Enrique Limón and Jeffrey White each hit 2 doubles in the blowout 11-4 victory.
- Warner’s brilliant form was rewarded with the Western League player of the month award. He hit 16-28 with the HR and 9 RBIs.
- We haven’t had a week over .500 since the all-star break. Madison have won 9 of their last 10 and have taken over the North Division lead.

This week: 3-3
Record: 56-43, 2nd place, 1 GB from Madison

DePodesta: No trade of Limón or Cantrell

By Maggie Pye | 19 Jul | 770 comments

Magpies general manager Billy DePodesta has said he expects the organisation to have a quiet trade deadline with no movement of players in or out. In particular, he insisted that the club would not seek to move on pitcher Kevin Cantrell and lead-off hitter Enrique Limón, whose contracts expire after this season. The rumour mill had been rife in recent weeks that DePodesta would seek exchange one or both of the players for younger replacements who would provide long-term value yet without weakening the roster and undermining the Magpies’ playoff push this season.

DePodesta said: “There is not, and never has been, any question of us trading Kevin or Enrique. They are hugely important members of this team, and I hope they will sign off their time as Magpies with a North Division title and, ideally, an SCL championship ring.” He said the team would look to fill the two players’ roster spots next season with young prospects, with pitcher Marv Lewis and outfield Rob Crawford among the candidates for promotion. With Limón, Cantrell and reliever Jack Morris all leaving to free agency and likely to attract draft pick compensation, the Magpies could stand to receive several high picks in next year’s player draft. Some fans are speculating that DePodesta was in fact fully prepared to trade both Limón and Cantrell but could simply not find a deal that he liked.

GM’s notebook - Series 34 and 35

Magpies 5-4 Olympia
Magpies 4-3 Olympia
Magpies 3-0 Olympia
St. Paul 1-2 Magpies
St. Paul 1-7 Magpies
St. Paul 3-4 Magpies

- Madison’s best outfielder, Jon Lindsey, suffered a broken knee cap and won’t play again this season. I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade before the deadline to address that weakness.
- Enrique Limón was the difference in the 4-3 triumph in game two versus Olympia. He hit 3-4, including a crucial 3-run home run in the 7th. This is why I won’t be trading him before the deadline.
- The Israel Padilla Rookie Season Movie, scene 18: Padilla throws 8.2 innings of 1-hit ball to complete the sweep of Olympia. Also, Jeffrey White hit his 20th HR.
- Offense was at a premium in the opener against St. Paul. Kevin Cantrell was magnificent for us: 8.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 10 K. Ángel Márquez took rookie closer Kas Oskamp (only drafted last month and fast-tracked to the majors by the Rockets) deep for the walk-off HR in the 9th.
- The 7-1 victory against St. Paul was unusual in that all the scoring for both teams came in the 7th inning. Wesley Weaver (9-8, 3.25) threw a complete game.
- Hartford’s Brian Coble became only the 9th player in SCL history to reach 3,000 career hits. He brought up the milestone on a remarkable day when he hit 3 homers.
- Olympia (39-65) traded their veteran ace Lance Marshall to Annapolis for a package of 3 prospects. Annapolis now have a deep and talented rotation, and they’ll be a challenge for anyone if those 5 guys can get it all together.

This week: 6-0
Record: 62-43, =1st place, tied with Madison

GM’s notebook - Series 36 and 37

Magpies 5-6 Salem
Magpies 8-2 Salem
Magpies 2-3 Salem
Carson City 1-7 Magpies
Carson City 2-1 Magpies
Carson City 2-0 Magpies

- Yesterday Salem acquired reliever Marvin Miller from Sacramento. The 35yo has been on the Stingrays’ minor league roster and on the trade block all season, after posting a 6.49 ERA last season. Today he made his Salem debut, pitched 4.1 scoreless innings and took the win. We lost 6-5 in the 12th.
- In the 8-2 win over Salem in the second game, a big 7-run 5th inning supported a strong start from Robinson Ortíz (7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K). Ángel Ochoa went 2-3, DBL, 2 BB).
- In the opening game of the Rattlesnakes series, the offense staked Kevin Cantrell to a 3-run lead in the 1st inning, and it was easy from there. Cantrell walked more than usual (4 in 6 IP) but was never under serious threat. Terry Lawrence had 3 base hits and 4 RBIs.
- The GM of Richmond (48-61) was on the phone several times trying to offer me their superstar closer Doug Bradley in exchange for a package of 4-5 of my prospects. Bradley is a 4-time all-star who would make any team better, but earns $12m per year and I just can’t afford him. Other GMs clearly feel my bullpen is a weakness, as I keep getting trade offers to give me relievers. I disagree, I think my bullpen is very good.
- Wesley Weaver was excellent over 8 innings in game two against Carson City, but an error from Eric Warner on a routine groundball led to the Snakes scoring 2 unearned runs in the 8th to hand Weaver the loss.
- Tom Hart lost the rubber game after getting no offensive help whatsoever.

This week: 2-4
Record: 64-47, 2nd place, 1 GB from Madison

Inconsistency could cost Magpies a playoff spot
Des Moines have leading offense and pitching staff but streaky play is costing wins

By Tim Curtain, 10:05AM, 1 Aug 50

The Des Moines Magpies are leading the Western League in many batting and pitching metrics. They are top of the WL’s 14 teams in batting average (.272), on-base percentage (.331) and strikeouts (554). They lead the WL in team ERA (2.95), strikeouts thrown (881), and in runs allowed (364) by far. They also have the highest mark in defensive efficiency (.730). Yet they lag behind perennial rivals Madison in the North Division. How come?

The answer: their streaky play. They are fully 9 games behind their Pythagorean record of 73-38. This points to their tendency of cashing in and racking up big wins when the going is good, but losing more of the close games than they should. Their offense is particularly culpable: they have repeatedly put up big innings only to then go quiet for an extended spell. They have positively beaten up on the WL’s two worst teams, St. Paul and Olympia, with a 16-2 record against the pair. They are only 48-45 versus the rest of the league.

GM Billy DePodesta has asked rookie manager Johannes Kepler to jiggle the lineup to try and solve the problem. Kepler has moved the talented Ángel Márquez - who has been under par the last couple of months after a flying start to the season and now carries a wOBA of only .307 - down from #3 to the 6-hole, to get Ángel Ochoa’s greater OBP to the plate earlier in the order.

Will this work? Only time will tell. But if the young Magpies roster cannot grind out wins more regularly, their streaky play will cost them a postseason berth.

GM’s notebook - Series 38 and 39

Magpies 10-2 Austin
Magpies 5-6 Austin
Magpies 0-4 Austin
Magpies 3-2 Lansing
Magpies 9-2 Lansing
Magpies 5-4 Lansing

- The deadline passed with no further trading. Kevin Cantrell, Enrique Limón and Jack Morris will all depart to free agency after the season. I should get compensation picks for at least Cantrell and Limón, if not all three players.
- The plan is for Cory Adams to step up into the rotation next year in place of Cantrell, Marv Lewis to take over from Morris in relief, Rhys Nunn and Robert Terry to compete for Adams’ bullpen spot, and Dave Plummer and Rob Crawford to compete to Limón’s outfield spot.
- Annapolis have re-signed 36-year-old Jim Dillman to a 3-year extension worth $26m per year. Dillman (.880 OPS) shows no sign yet of succumbing to the ageing process, but this contract feels like a huge risk for the Mustangs to me.
- Ochoa and Jeffrey White both hit 2-4 with a HR to see of Austin to begin the week. Robinson Ortíz threw a tidy 7 innings of 2-run ball.
- 6-0 down heading into the 7th inning the next day, Ernesto Solís led a staunch fightback which fell just 1 run shy of tying the game.
- Lee Cox won the rubber game for Austin with a dominant display. He took a no-hitter into the 8th inning, and we ended up with only 2 hits.
- We went up against another elite pitcher, Magpies killer Carlos Lara, on day one in Lansing. But Wesley Weaver matched him brilliantly, and Ángel Márquez’s solo HR in the top of the 9th nicked the victory.
- The 9-2 win in the second game against the Sharks had a ridiculous finish. Ken James blew a 2-1 save opportunity in the 9th to take the game to extras. We then scored seven in the top of the 12th for a big win.
- The game, however, was marred by a nasty injury to shortstop Eric Warner. He fractured a finger and is probably done for the season. Juan MacNamara is recalled for maybe his last chance with us. MacNamara and Nick Baker will alternate at SS.
- A lengthy early rain delay turned the final game into a bullpen day. Ours was better than Lansing’s. Just.
- We remain 1 game behind Madison. We have a 6-game cushion over chasers Bismarck and Lansing in the wildcard race.

This week: 4-2
Record: 68-49, 2nd place, 1 GB from Madison

From: Aristotle Catheter M.D., Club Doctor
To: Billy DePodesta

Des Moines Magpies Medical Department
INJURY REPORT: ERIC WARNER

My medical staff have confirmed that the index finger injury sustained by Eric Warner in last night’s 9-2 win against Lansing is a fracture. He was hit by a pitch measured at over 94mph.

Although the bones in the hand are small, this is not a minor injury. The bones in the hand line up very precisely to allow the performance of specialist functions and manipulating objects. Our medical staff put Eric’s broken bone back in place quickly, and surgery will not be required. The finger has already been placed in a splint to protect from further injury. This will be worn for about 3-4 weeks, although x-rays will be taken at regular intervals to allow the team to monitor the recovery process.

Assuming that initial period progresses well, Eric will then need to do simple rehabilitation exercises each day to help reduce the finger’s stiffness and swelling. Our physical therapist will provide him with specialised and customised guidance. All told, the healing process will take about 2 months. Eric will certainly not be fit to return to action during the regular season, and I would recommend he does not return to the active roster for a postseason series, should we still be playing when he is fit again. The best course of action is most definitely to shut him down until spring training next year.

GM’s notebook - Series 40 and 41

Santa Fe 3-2 Magpies
Santa Fe 1-12 Magpies
Santa Fe 1-0 Magpies
Magpies 8-7 Phoenix
Magpies 3-4 Phoenix
Magpies 8-5 Phoenix

- Nick Baker hit 2-2 with a HR and DBL in the opener versus Santa Fe. But he also committed 2 errors at SS, one of which led to the winning unearned run.
- Our latest blowout win, a 12-1 victory, saw great performances from Kevin Cantrell (9 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER), Jeffrey White (4-5, HR) and Ángel Márquez (2-5, 2 DBL). Today it was Juan MacNamara who committed an error at SS. Do neither of these guys want the job?
- Austin’s Lee Cox followed his shutout against us last week with another in his next start against Olympia.
- Tom Hart wasn’t fully fit for his next start in the Santa Fe rubber game, so it was the ideal time to trial Cory Adams for a rotation spot next year. And it didn’t come any harder, as he faced 3-time Outstanding Pitcher winner Donnie Lee. Adams was magnificent and went toe-to-toe with the future Hall of Famer, giving up just 1 run over 7 innings. Unfortunately Lee was even better.
- That Santa Fe series sums up our streaky play this year. We outscored them 14-5 over the 3 games but lost the series 2-1.
- Baker strained his shoulder making a diving stop during the 4-3 defeat to Phoenix. He’ll be out for a month. Opportunity knocks for Yoshino Kubota, who’ll now take over playing SS on alternate days with MacNamara.
- With excellent base stealers MacNamara and Kubota now on the roster, we’ll try and nab a bag a bit more frequently.
- Bernardo Merrado got both a blown save and the win in the 8-5 victory that ended the week. He gave up a game-tying HR in the 9th, but Kepler kept him in and he was still on the mound when we scored 3 in the top of the 11th inning. Kubota hit 1-3 on his Magpies debut.

This week: 3-3
Record: 71-52, 2nd place, 1 GB from Madison

GM’s notebook - Series 42 and 43

Baton Rouge 4-5 Magpies
Baton Rouge 7-2 Magpies
Baton Rouge 4-5 Magpies
Magpies 9-8 Sacramento
Magpies 2-4 Sacramento
Magpies 3-4 Sacramento

- The week began with yet another extra innings game. Ken James blew a 3-run save opportunity in the 9th, but Gianni Hagenaars’s RBI double edged it in the 13th.
- Our bullpen is absolutely outstanding. Their overall ERA this season is a staggering 2.09, and all seven guys currently on the roster have ERAs below 2.90 (David Gaines is highest at 2.89). James earned his 21st save from 23 opportunities in the second 5-4 victory of the week against Baton Rouge.
- Ernesto Solís hit 3 doubles in game one in Sacramento. Terry Lawrence also had 3 hits in the game, all singles.
- The final game in California was a bullpen day, and Cory Adams made his second Magpies start. This one was less good than his first: 6 IP, 3 ER.
- Our infield depth is being sorely tested. News came through after the game that Yoshino Kubota is the latest position player to be injured. He was hit by a pitch and suffered a fractured rib. Aristotle Catheter estimates he’ll be on the DL for about 4 weeks. My hitting coaches say that our June top draft pick, Alex Becker, is already ready for the major leagues, and he gets the nod over Zacharie Garneau to share SS duties with Juan MacNamara.
- That’s now three shortstops on the DL. I think our players have had more spells on the DL in this season than we have in total over my previous four years here.

This week: 3-3
Record: 74-55, =1st place, tied with Madison

FANGRAPHICS
Chat: Osiris Sabretooth is apparently less over his ex than we thought and is unavailable today, so Euler Neutrino steps in to answer your questions.

9:00

Euler: Hello everyone! Welcome to today’s chat, starting bang on time. Fire away!

9:01

GWRBI: Hi there, Euler! What about the Magpies bullpen, eh? A 2.09 collective ERA. Think about that for a moment. On average, they’ve been a brilliant relief pitcher. On average.

9:01

Euler: Yeah, they really have been terrific. And Jack Morris aside, all incredibly young, too. They could get even better!

9:02

DJTony: A big groovy shout-out to my man Jesús Benítez in the Magpies pen: only his second season in the majors and he’s putting up a groovetastic 1.21 ERA. Rock on!

9:03

Euler: Dig deeper into the data and Benítez’s numbers look even better. In 59.2 innings he has struck out 84 and given up just 1 home run. He has a 1.81 FIP. And these stats are despite him having a well above league average batting average on balls in play of .309. I think there’s a strong argument that he has the best fastball in the game today. Okay, he gives up walks slightly more often than you’d like for an elite reliever, but when you have stuff like his the odd free pass doesn’t really matter.

9:03

Euler: People generally should use the word ‘groovetastic’ more often, IMHO.

9:04

Attention Please!: I thought trading Gabe Copeland earlier in the season was a big mistake by DePodesta. In fact the Magpies haven’t missed him in the slightest.

9:05

Euler: No, and Tom Hart, who came the other way in the Copeland trade, has obviously significantly improved the rotation. But then Copeland has 21 saves and a 1.05 ERA since he was moved to Baton Rouge, so you have to say that the trade was a win-win for both teams.

9:07

Rex the T-Rex: Can I just give a quick nod to the Magpies’ one veteran pitcher, Jack Morris. He has a 1.52 ERA!

9:08

Euler: It’s been a stunning turnaround season from Morris. His ERA+ the previous two seasons with Raleigh and Albany were 92 and 95. This year it’s 248. He doesn’t look to have made any mechanical changes. I think it is purely the confidence gained from pitching in front of the Magpies’ excellent defense, rather than the comparative shambles he had ‘supporting’ him before.

9:09

Euler: Alas, my time is up, folks. It’s been a pleasure to join you today. Until next time!

GM’s notebook - Series 44 and 45

Bismarck 1-2 Magpies
Bismarck 5-4 Magpies
Bismarck 10-2 Magpies
Magpies 2-9 Madison
Magpies 6-2 Madison
Magpies 2-3 Madison

- The week started with a gem from Kevin Cantrell (10-7, 2.55) against the Coyotes: 8 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K.
- José Pereira has had a difficult time since his elevation to the roster as backup catcher to Ernesto Solís. So far he’s hitting just .164 in 19 games. But he’s only 23 and I’ll be patient with him.
- We lost the Bismarck series with a dreadful performance in the 10-2 loss. Only Solís (4-4 with a DBL) had a good day. Not what we wanted going into the crucial visit to North Division leaders Madison.
- We are allowing far too many runs at the moment. We’ve restricted opponents to fewer than 4 runs only once in the last 12 games. Our defense is slipping. Ángel Márquez is probably the strongest at shortstop on the roster with Eric Warner injured, so I’ve asked Johannes Kepler to swap him there, and have Juan MacNamara / Alex Becker playing 3B. Hopefully that will be a better overall defensive alignment.
- The Brown Bears battered us in the opener. Wesley Weaver and Jesús Benítez combined to allow the 9 runs in the first 4+ innings.
- A quality start was desperately needed from Robinson Ortíz to steady the ship in game two in Madison, and we got one: just 2 runs given up from 8.1 IP.

This week: 2-4
Record: 76-59, 2nd place, 3 GB from Madison

The Des Moines Telegraph

No end in sight for Magpies financial woes, says Rueda

Magpies owner Chris Rueda has revealed that there will be no quick resolution to the club’s financial woes, and that the strict limits he has placed on the team’s payroll expenditure will continue for at least the next two seasons.

Speaking at a fans’ forum event at the Iowa Ballpark yesterday evening, Rueda said that while the danger of the organisation folding completely had passed, strong financial discipline was needed to return the club to a sustainable footing.

“In the last couple of years, we have had to operate with a tight restriction on our player payroll. I have seen it rumoured that our annual payroll limit is $100m, and I can confirm that this figure is approximately correct. This allows us to retain a core of star players but necessitates an emphasis on youth development”, Rueda said. “Unfortunately we will need to continue to operate this type of arrangement for the foreseeable future. Obviously, playoff revenue helps our financial position, and Billy [DePodesta, the general manager] has done a terrific job of keeping the team competitive despite our constraints. I am confident that we will return to a position of being able to invest heavily in the team at some stage. But that time is not now.”

Speaking at the event, DePodesta insisted he remained fully committed to the Magpies, and dismissed rumours linking him with an offseason move to the wealthy but struggling Santa Fe Outlaws.

GM’s notebook - Series 46 and 47

Magpies 7-3 Denver
Magpies 2-9 Denver
Magpies 9-2 Denver
Olympia 1-3 Magpies
Olympia 3-4 Magpies
Olympia 2-4 Magpies

- Israel Padilla recovered from a slow start to post 8 innings of 3-run ball and take the win in the 7-3 defeat of Denver. He has had a rookie slump over the last month or so, and hopefully this is him coming out of it. Ángel Márquez hit 4-4.
- A dreadful outing from Tom Hart in the second Snox Sox game: 2.1 IP, 4 H, 7 ER, 5 BB. He has cooled off considerably since his brilliant early starts here. Jeffrey White hit HR #25 of the season.
- We reversed the scoreline the following day. António Fernández destroyed the Denver pitching, going 2-3 with 2 HR (both measured at over 400ft) and 2 BB. Enrique Limón and Ernesto Solís both hit 3-5.
- Robinson Ortíz looks to be running into top form at just the right time. He gave the Wolfhounds little to hit in the 3-1 victory, posting 8 inning for 1 ER with 8 punchouts. Ken James got save #25 of the season. Johannes Kepler has maybe realised the conventional wisdom of playing the closer in save situations does have merit.
- Montgomery’s Gerardo Rivera won EL pitcher of the month gong for August. He reminds me again that I was wrong to trade him a few years ago.
- Márquez hit his 20th home run in the 4-3 win in game two of the Olympia series. Their starter Blake Thomas came out of the game in the 2nd inning with shoulder pains, and may not be fit again in time for the start of next season.
- Pedro Soto is day-to-day for a week with a strained back. He won’t be risked, and will be taken out of the lineup until he’s fully fit.

This week: 5-1
Record: 81-60, =1st place, tied with Madison

From: Billy DePodesta
To: Barnaby Progression, Des Moines Magpies minor league manager
Cc: Johannes Kepler, Des Moines Magpies major league manager

Des Moines Magpies General Manager’s Office
SEPTEMBER CALL-UPS

Dear Barnaby

As it is 1 September tomorrow, teams across the SCL are, as you know, permitted to carry up to forty players on their active roster until the end of the regular season. I would like to add just two players from our minor league squad: relief pitcher Rhys Nunn and outfielder Mike Howard.

Rhys has pitched extremely well in the minor league team this year, and only remains there because of the strength of our major league bullpen and absence of injuries. I believe he will provide Johannes with a quality extra bullpen arm, who is also capable of making a spot start during the final few games should we qualify for the postseason and wish to rest a starting pitcher. Mike is, as you’re aware, the fastest runner in the entire organisation and will provide Johannes with an electric pinch-running threat.

I would be grateful if you could please ensure both players are notified and return to Des Moines by noon tomorrow, in time for the game against Olympia. Please also, of course, do not select them for today’s minor league fixture.

With warmest best wishes for the rest of the minor league season,
Billy

GM’s notebook - Series 48 and 49

Magpies 4-5 St. Paul
Magpies 1-4 St. Paul
Magpies 6-1 St. Paul
Salem 3-9 Magpies
Salem 1-3 Magpies
Salem 1-7 Magpies

- A terrible fielding error at first base by Jeffrey White let St. Paul score the winning run in the bottom of the 10th in our 5-4 loss.
- We looked on course for an ignominious sweep by the Rockets until we put up one of our trademark big innings in the 7th inning of game 3, scoring all 6 of our runs. Juan MacNamara hit a clutch 2-out grand slam which effectively ended the game.
- Ángel Márquez is filling in admirably at SS. In 12 starts there he has a .982 fielding percentage and +1.5 zone rating.
- Enrique Limón hit an incredible TWO GRAND SLAMS in the 9-3 win against Salem. His wonderful display stole the headlines from a superb spot start by Cory Adams (7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 BB). Adams will definitely be joining the rotation next year in Kevin Cantrell’s spot.
- Nick Baker has come off the DL and 3B Alex Becker goes back to the minor league roster. Becker held his own in the bigs (6-26 with 3 BB) but I’d like him to continue his development away from the spotlight of a pennant race. Plus the move halts his major league service time clock.
- The 3-1 victory in the second Ironclads game was a great demonstration of controlled pitching by Cantrell: 8 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K.
- Tom Hart took his record to 16-6, 2.89 with a dominant outing to wrap up the sweep over Salem, throwing 8 innings for 1 run on 2 hits, fanning 9. Terry Lawrence scored 4 of our 7 runs.
- Carson City are the first team to clinch a postseason berth, by winning the West Coast Division at a canter. It’s only their 5th Division title ever.
- This is going to be a tense run-in. With 15 games to go, we lead Madison by 1 game. We have a 6-game cushion for one of the two wildcard spots.

This week: 4-2
Record: 85-62, 1st place, 1 game lead over Madison

The Knuckleball Times

Draft retrospective: DePodesta’s first Magpies draft, June 2046

1st round: SP Wesley Weaver

The 13th overall pick of the draft, Weaver reached the big leagues before the end of the 2046 season, playing in 17 games out of the bullpen and hasn’t looked back since. He stayed in the Magpies bullpen in 2047, and has since had 3 seasons as a key member of the team’s rotation. An all-star in 2048 when we went 21-6 with a 2.38 ERA. Has become renowned for his outstanding control and ability to hit his spots with any of the 5 pitches in his repertoire in any count.

2nd round: SP Bernardo Merrado

Merrado was a starting pitcher at high school but was projected to be a reliever in the major leagues. And so it has proved. He progressed steadily through the Magpies’ minor league system, finally getting called up for 8 appearances towards the end of last season. Currently enjoying a successful first full season in the Magpies bullpen, with a 2.91 ERA over 22 relief appearances and 4 spot starts.

3rd round: MR Matt Lyons

A flame-thrower with dominant stuff but questionable control, Lyons was blocked from the big leagues with the Magpies as the team acquired even better young arms in later drafts. He was moved to Annapolis shortly before the trade deadline in 2047 in the deal that brought all-star infielder Roberto Caro to Des Moines. He made the Mustangs’ big league roster in 2049, and this season has gone 4-4 with a 3.75 ERA, including 16 saves during a spell as closer.

4th round: MR Carlos Santos

A flyballer with a tasty changeup, Santos has spent his entire professional career on the Magpies’ minor league roster. He has failed to develop the stuff and control the scouts expected of him, and is unlikely to make it to the big leagues.

5th round: C Dominic Farrell

Farrell has been a good minor league player who has a talent for pitch-framing and calling a good game. What has prevented his progress to the major league is his bat, which has remained well short of major league quality. Now age 26, a shot at the big time seems a long one. Has expressed an interest in moving into coaching when he finishes his playing career.

GM’s notebook - Series 50 and 51

Magpies 2-3 Carson City
Magpies 8-10 Carson City
Magpies 11-4 Carson City
Austin 3-2 Magpies
Austin 6-8 Magpies
Austin 3-2 Magpies

- In game two versus Carson City, we were 8-1 up and coasting entering the bottom of the 5th inning when the roof caved in. The Rattlesnakes scored 6 in the bottom of the inning (of which 3 runs were unearned after an error from Ángel Márquez), and they completed the comeback with 3 runs off Jesús Benítez in the 8th.
- We weren’t going to let a big lead slip again in the final game of the Rattlesnakes series. Enrique Limón led the way with 4-5.
- Kevin Cantrell’s fabulous display in the home opener against Austin (7.2 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 12 K) was wasted when Ken James blew his fourth save of the year.
- Limón is giving us vital at-bats in this run-in. He was instrumental in the 8-6 triumph against the Tycoons, hitting 3-4, DBL, BB.
- Fielding errors proved costly again in the final game of the week. Ángel Ochoa and Nick Baker were both guilty, and all 3 Austin runs were unearned.
- A bad week which unfortunately coincided with Madison going 6-0, leaving us suddenly 3 games adrift in the North Division race. We have a 5-game cushion over chasers Bismarck for a wildcard spot (giving a magic number of 5), but that will soon disappear if we carry on literally throwing games away like this week.
- 2-time Western League champs Baton Rouge will have another shot at glory after clinching the South Division. Reigning overall SCL holders Montgomery are on the cusp of a playoff spot too, with a 6-game lead in the EL South East Division.
- Our 729-530 run differential gives us a Pythagorean record of 100-53. We are fully THIRTEEN games behind that. Geez.

This week: 2-4
Record: 87-66, 2nd place, 3 GB from Madison
