GM’s notebook - Series 28 and 29

Phoenix 6-1 Magpies
Phoenix 3-2 Magpies
Phoenix 4-6 Magpies
Magpies 3-4 Olympia
Magpies 3-4 Olympia
Magpies 5-2 Olympia

- Lansing’s injury woes continue. Now all-star catcher Jimmy Howard and their best remaining middle reliever Don Rich (formerly of this parish) are also on the DL, Rich for 8-9 months. I’ve never seen an SCL team endure quite such a run of injury misfortune.
- Hartford’s 42-year-old veteran Brian Coble has become the SCL’s all-time hits leader. His total of 3,449 has exceeded the previous mark of Hall of Famer Craig Jones. Coble is now chasing down Tsugahara Baba’s RBI record of 1,935 (he has 1,921). He’s signed with Hartford for next season too, so James Fox’s HR record of 688 is also under threat (Coble has 658).
- Luis Vélez did what an ace should and stopped us getting swept in the final game of the Raccoons series. He threw 8 IP for just 2 earned runs; 2 unearned runs also scored after a rare fielding error from catcher Blair Cunningham.
- Making a spot start in the Olympia opener, Ronald Williams was brilliant (8 IP, 6 H, 1 ER) but our spluttering offense couldn’t get him the win.
- Jesús Zamora blew the save in the second 4-3 loss to the Wolfhounds. David Gaines has taken over lefty setup duties from him, and Zamora needs to improve fast or Scotty Reese will get his bullpen spot.
- Rob Crawford and Joe Merrill both hit homers and doubles in the win that avoided the sweep.
- That was a very poor week against two sub-.500 teams. We must do better or Madison will overhaul us in short order.

This week: 2-4
Record: 52-35, 1st place, 2 game lead over Madison

GM’s notebook - Series 30 and 31

Lansing 1-8 Magpies
Lansing 4-1 Magpies
Lansing 2-3 Magpies
Bismarck 6-0 Magpies
Bismarck 1-0 Magpies
Bismarck 4-2 Magpies

- Israel Padilla threw a brilliant complete game in the first match of this week-long homestand: 9 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K.
- There are rumblings that Luis Vélez is getting frustrated with the lack of run support from his colleagues in the lineup. In the second Sharks game he threw 8.1 innings of 1-run ball, but took a no-decision.
- The offense was just dire in the 1-0 loss to the Coyotes. Just 2 base hits and no walks. Tom Hart’s terrific performance (8 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 9 K) was totally wasted.
- Johannes Kepler kept the team in the locker room for over 2 hours after the final Bismarck game. Shouting and banging could be heard throughout. At the end, the players and coaches left in silence without saying a word to the waiting reporters. Johannes said to me later: “Some things needed to be said. Our current play is totally unacceptable.”
- Let’s hope that has an impact, because our lead in the North Division has gone.

This week: 2-4
Record: 54-39, =1st place, tied with Madison

Magpies close to landing Parker?

Posted by Sergio Opener | Jul 14 | 2:34PM

The Magpies are rumoured to be in ‘advanced talks’ with the Baton Rouge Deltas over a pre-deadline trade for star hitter Ray Parker. Sources at both clubs refused to comment when questioned by SCLhotstove.com earlier today.

A 4-time all-star, Parker would represent a significant upgrade to a Magpies lineup which has spluttered since the all-star break. He would appear to be a good fit at second base, where Félix Hernández (.231/.272/.374 over 47 games) has been a huge disappointment since joining from Annapolis.

GM’s notebook - Series 32 and 33

Magpies 4-5 Denver
Magpies 9-2 Denver
Magpies 4-5 Denver
Salem 3-4 Magpies
Salem 4-2 Magpies
Salem 3-10 Magpies

- In the Denver opener, Ronald Williams pitched a beautiful 8 innings for just 1 run on 5 hits. Then in a disastrous 9th inning, errors from Ernesto Solís and Tadamichi Hamada led to Ken James giving up 4 unearned runs for a brutal loss.
- Solís atoned for his error the next day by hitting 3-4 with 2 doubles and a walk.
- Pedro Soto went 2-5 with a home run and a double in the opening game against the Ironclads. We nicked it in the 12th.
- Time to call upon top pitching prospect Scotty Reese. Jesús Zamora (5.85 ERA, 6.90 FIP from 18 games) has been erratic in what is his second full season in the bigs. Zamora has been sent down to the minor league roster to work on one or two things with Peter Venkman-Ackroyd, and Reese will start his major league career in the bullpen.
- Game two of the Salem series went to extra innings too, but this time we came out on the wrong side of it.
- Infielders Ángel Márquez and Bob Ayers got 3 hits apiece in the thumping victory in the series rubber game. Reese pitched a 1-2-3 inning on his debut.

This week: 3-3
Record: 57-42, 1st place, 1 game lead over Madison

Parker heads to Des Moines in huge statement of intent from Magpies

By Maggie Pye | 19 Jul | 45,903 comments

In a move which is sure to send shudders down the spine of their North Division rivals, the Magpies today announced they had reached agreement with the Baton Rouge Deltas to acquire their best hitter, Ray Parker. Having predominantly played CF in Louisiana, the versatile slugger will move to second base for the Magpies, and adds a top-quality bat to an already strong lineup. The 27-year-old all-star is on a $15m per year contract for this year and next. Parker is hitting .320 with a .973 OPS so far this season, and his arrival signals the Magpies’ determination to reclaim their SCL Cup Final Series crown. He will be in their lineup for their crucial road trip to North Division pennant rivals Madison.

In return, the struggling Deltas have obtained three good infielders: Félix Hernández, Glove Wizard standard veteran Paul Jackson, and the Magpies’ top hitting prospect, Shane Hendricks. Still only 22, shortstop Hendricks is a fine prospect, but Magpies front office sources say their coaching staff had become concerned at his lack of development progress on defense. The organisation prioritises great defense at the position and reportedly see Bob Ayers as their long-term keeper in the role. Hernández had underwhelmed at the plate over 47 games for the Magpies, and Jackson had remained on the minor league roster since joining as a free agent over the winter. The rebuilding Deltas view the pair as proven major leaguers who will give decent production while their prospects, now including Hendricks, continue to develop.

GM’s notebook - Series 34 and 35

Magpies 8-1 Madison
Magpies 8-2 Madison
Magpies 6-2 Madison
Sacramento 5-4 Magpies
Sacramento 6-2 Magpies
Sacramento 3-11 Magpies

- Ray Parker hit 2-5 on his first appearance in a Magpies uniform in the resounding win on day one in Madison. Attention on his debut overshadowed great performances from Tadamichi Hamada (3-5, HR) and Luis Vélez (6 scoreless IP, 1.57 ERA).
- The lineup didn’t let up the following day, and smashed Madison ace Al Harper out of the game in the 2nd inning. Ernesto Solís hit 4-4, Rob Crawford went 4-5, and Parker hit 3-5.
- More injury woes for Lansing. Carlos Lara had only just returned from a 3-month lay-off, but is now done for the season. He’s rumoured to need Tommy John surgery.
- A fine outing from Ricardo Vargas (8 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 3 BB) and Parker’s first Magpies homer completed the superb sweep of the Brown Bears.
- We salvaged the final game in the Sacramento series thanks to a huge 9-run 6th inning, in which Earl Becker hit both a home run and a double. Pedro Soto and Blair Cunningham each went 3-4 with a double.

This week: 4-2
Record: 61-44, 1st place, 3 game lead over Madison

GM’s notebook - Series 36 and 37

Magpies 4-2 Carson City
Magpies 6-1 Carson City
Magpies 14-6 Carson City
Magpies 1-5 Austin
Magpies 6-3 Austin
Magpies 7-4 Austin

- With a contract worth only $1.1m this year and next, backup outfielder Joe Merrill may be one of the best VFM players on our roster. He smacked a 2-run HR in the 12th frame in the Rattlesnakes opener to grab us the victory.
- Robert Terry (8-4, 3.15) was a bit wayward at times in game two in Carson City, but got the crucial outs when he needed them.
- The 14 runs in the final game of the series came despite us failing to earn a single walk. Gonzalo Torralda, who has been in a mini-slump most of the season, hit 4-5. Pedro Soto and Ray Parker each bagged 4 RBIs.
- The Rattlesnakes went into that series as the Western League’s top-ranked team, but we leave it with us now tied at 64-44.
- #1 and #2 hitters in the lineup, Soto and Tadamichi Hamada, both hit 3-5 in the 6-3 victory over Austin. Former Magpies infielder Carlos Zúñiga hit 4-4 against us, but to no avail.
- Luis Vélez threw 8.1 innings of 3-run ball to win the Tycoons series. He’s now 11-3 with a 1.70 ERA. But Santa Fe ace and future Hall of Famer Donnie Lee has the league’s best ERA at 1.61.

This week: 5-1
Record: 66-45, 1st place, 5 game lead over Madison

Solís contract extension negotiations stall

Posted by Joe Deodorant | Jul 31 | 4:53PM

Magpies catcher Ernesto Solís looks to be headed for free agency at the end of the season, the player’s agent said today. Solís has been the starter behind the plate for the club for the past four years, and both parties were keen to secure his future in Des Moines. He has been in fine form this campaign, hitting .311 at the plate and preventing 44% of base stealing attempts against him. His good performances, combined with a down year from understudy Blair Cunningham, seemed to motivate both parties to try to reach an agreement to prolong his stay in Iowa.

It now appears that those talks have broken down, seemingly with the Magpies unwilling to accommodate the annual salary level - thought to be north of $12m annually - being sought by Solís, who is earning $5.5m this season. Solís’s representatives say the player wants to focus on helping the Magpies reach the playoffs in defense of their Cup Final Series for now, but the two sides agreed to resume discussions in a few weeks. The Magpies front office was unavailable for comment.

Parker makes Magpies lineup a juggernaut
Posted by P.J. Pyjamas, @jammies

The Magpies’ lineup was already pretty good. They did just win the Cup Final Series last October, after all. But the recent addition of 4-time all-star Ray Parker has turned it into arguably the SCL’s best.

It has not been plain sailing for the team at the plate this year, however. For spells the Magpies lineup has struggled for hits and struggled to score runs. The talent is there; the performances sometimes have not been. The front office’s decision to trade long-term second baseman Ángel Ochoa for Félix Hernández, who had starred for Annapolis in the Cup Final Series but promptly entered a bad slump in Des Moines, backfired and seemed to have badly weakened the lineup. Another 2052 postseason hero, center fielder Earl Becker, has had a below-par year by his standards. The team’s offensive tribulations came to a head with the home series against Bismarck early last month, when the team scored just 2 runs in the 3 games and barely got a runner on base.

If the Magpies go on to retain their SCL crown, GM Billy DePodesta’s decision to take advantage of Baton Rouge’s disappointing campaign to acquire Parker, shipping the unfortunate Hernández the other way, will be seen as a master stroke and the catalyst. Parker’s impact has been immediate. In the 12 games prior to his arrival, the Magpies scored 47 runs. In the 12 games since, they’ve scored 75. Parker himself has hit .288/.309/.538 over that span. He has inspired the team to a 9-3 run, establishing a 5-game lead in the North Division and overtaking Carson City for the Western League’s best record.

GM’s notebook - Series 38 and 39

St. Paul 6-2 Magpies
St. Paul 3-2 Magpies
St. Paul 7-3 Magpies
Magpies 2-3 Baton Rouge
Magpies 6-2 Baton Rouge
Magpies 1-5 Baton Rouge

- Robert Terry had a difficult day in the Rockets opener. Kepler eventually pulled him after 7 innings in which he gave up 10 hits, 3 walks and 6 runs.
- LF Tadamichi Hamada hit a HR, triple and double in the second game versus St. Paul. But Rockets phenom starter Kas Oskamp was on his ‘A’ game and kept the rest of the lineup quiet.
- The Rockets then roughed up Tom Hart (4.2 IP, 9 H, 5 ER) to complete a disappointing sweep.
- To make matters worse, the in-form Hamada was given a 9-game suspension for fighting with Rockets reliever T.J. Goodwin. Joe Merrill will start in LF while Hamada is sidelined.
- Former Magpies team-mates Kevin Cantrell and Al Elliott (now at Annapolis and Montgomery) were suspended for 6 games each for brawling too. There was no bad blood between them while they were here together (the 2047 season).
- On day two against Baton Rouge, Vélez showed his quality by snapping the losing streak at 4. Rob Crawford starred with the bat, hitting 3-5 with a HR (16).
- We need to forget about this dreadful week and move on.

This week: 1-5
Record: 67-50, 1st place, 3 game lead over Madison

OFFICE OF THE STATE CAPITALS LEAGUE COMMISSIONER

NOTICE OF SUSPENSION: TADAMICHI HAMADA

This letter provides official notification from the Office of the State Capitals League Commissioner of the nine-game suspension that has been issued to Des Moines Magpies outfielder Tadamichi Hamada. The suspension applies with immediate effect. Mr Hamada has no right of appeal against this decision.

The Commissioner has reviewed television footage of last night’s game against the St. Paul Rockets. While he recognises that Mr Hamada appeared to be deliberately hit by the pitch from Rockets reliever T.J. Goodwin, he also considers that Mr Hamada’s decision to rush the mound and throw a punch in Mr Godwin’s direction was completely unnecessary and in clear contravention of the SCL’s player code of conduct.

The Commissioner is extremely saddened and disappointed by Mr Hamada’s conduct, particularly as it seems to follow a pattern of behaviour, following his suspension for a similar incident last July. As such, the Commissioner feels he has no alternative but to issue a more severe reprimand on this occasion. The Commissioner will consider further sanctions against Mr Hamada, including sizeable financial punishments, if there is any repeat of this inexcusable behaviour in future.

Yours sincerely,

Rufus S. Bureaucracy
State Capitals League Deputy Commissioner

GM’s notebook - Series 40 and 41

Santa Fe 4-6 Magpies
Santa Fe 2-5 Magpies
Santa Fe 1-10 Magpies
Magpies 5-0 Phoenix
Magpies 0-3 Phoenix
Magpies 4-2 Phoenix

- 4-3 down entering the bottom of the 9th, we were heading for another defeat in the opener versus Santa Fe. But Rob Crawford’s 448ft, 3-run walk-off home run saved us, and sent 39,000 fans home happy.
- Tom Hart was back to his best in the 5-2 win in game two of the Outlaws series: 8.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 12 K. Ken James picked up save number 25 on the year.
- A dominant display from Ricardo Vargas (7.1 innings on 1-run ball) secured the sweep. Bob Ayers was the pick of the batters, hitting 3-4 with a double. Earl Becker smashed his 24th home run.
- Israel Padilla hurled an absolute gem on day one of the Phoenix road trip, completing 8.1 shutout innings with just 4 hits.
- Raccoons ace Junji Tada was too good for us the following day.
- We bounced back brilliantly after the poor results last week - there is some real character and fighting spirit in the camp.
- We are leading the entire SCL by a distance in runs against (405) and team ERA (3.00). This is down to the starting rotation, where Luis Vélez (3.02) and Hart (3.05) are ranked 2nd and 3rd for FIP, and Robert Terry (3.35) is 10th. The other two starters, Padilla (3.57) and Vargas (3.82) are no slouches, either. The pundits are widely rating the group is the SCL’s strongest ever rotation.
- Scotty Reese has made a great start to his big league career. In 6 appearances, he’s allowed just 1 run from 8.1 IP, fanning 10.

This week: 5-1
Record: 72-51, 1st place, 5 game lead over Madison

GM’s notebook - Series 42 and 43

Olympia 2-6 Magpies
Olympia 2-6 Magpies
Olympia 2-4 Magpies
Magpies 14-3 Lansing
Magpies 2-0 Lansing
Magpies 6-3 Lansing

- Tom Hart put in another superb display against Olympia: 8.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 11 K. Ray Parker went 2-4 and hit his 30th home run of the season; 5 of those have been for us.
- Lansing’s 2053 injury woes, part 94: the club announced today that reliever Jorge Cruz (former Magpie) has suffered a setback in his recovery from radial nerve decompression surgery and will now definitely miss the rest of the season. This year has been a total write-off for them.
- Parker had an even better day in the second Wolfhounds game, going 3-3 with a HR, double and walk. He then went 2-4 with a HR and double in the final game, completing a wonderful series. The Iowa Ballpark crowd were chanting his name over and over.
- The opener in Lansing was a tight affair until we burst it open with 7 runs in the 7th, which included a grand slam from, guess who, Parker. Bob Ayers went 4-5, while Earl Becker and Rob Crawford each grabbed 3 hits.
- Robert Terry tormented the Sharks lineup in the next game, finishing with a line of 7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. However, third baseman Ángel Márquez sprained his elbow on a defensive play, and will be on the DL for 5 weeks. Shosuke Tanaka, acquired from the Rockets over the winter, is called up to show me what he can do, and will share game time with Eric Warner.

This week: 6-0
Record: 78-51, 1st place, 8 game lead over Madison

INJURY REPORT: ÁNGEL MÁRQUEZ, MARV LEWIS

I am keeping these injury update memos shorter and more informal than in the past, as per your recent request.

Infielder Ángel Márquez has sprained his ankle. Exactly how we managed to sprain an ankle while throwing the ball on a routine defensive play is beyond me, but Ángel has managed it. It isn’t a severe injury but he needs to rest up; it’s touch and go whether he’ll be fit before the end of the regular season.

Marv Lewis is continuing his lengthy rehab after his successful Tommy John surgery in April. At this point I’m concerned that the injury may have long-term impacts on his pitching, but we will continue to monitor his progress carefully.

FANGRAPHICS
Chat: Osiris Sabretooth was up most of last night and now believes that teething is the work of the devil.

11:07

Osiris: Apologies, folks, for the late start this morning. I’m desperately in need of some caffeine to keep me awake.

11:08

My Name Isn’t Earl: The Rattlesnakes and Des Moines seems to have their divisions pretty much sewn up, and Austin lead in the South Division by 4 games. Will the Western League see all three division winners retain their titles?

11:08

Osiris: I’ll be amazed if the Rattlesnakes and Magpies don’t win their divisions fairly comfortably from here. Austin, though, I’m less certain; Santa Fe are a better team than their 66-63 record suggests. It’s 2030 since all 3 WL division champs reclaimed their crowns (Sacramento, Lansing, Denver).

11:10

Geology Rocks!: There’s no real stand-out team in the Eastern League, IMO.

11:11

Osiris: Agreed. I think Columbus (73-56) have the most talent, but haven’t consistently produced their best. Don’t write off Annapolis either, that lineup is brutal when it’s firing on all cylinders.

11:12

Antidisestablishmentarianism: I almost feel sorry for Lansing. Could any team have coped with so many injuries to key players?

11:13

Osiris: The SCL has never seen a team suffer such a bad run of injury luck. I think they’ve drawn a line under this season now. But next season when they get their best guys back they will be a threat again.

11:15

For Emergency Use Only: Who’ll finish the season with the WL’s best record, Des Moines or Carson City?

11:16

Osiris: I think it’ll be close. The BuTToNS projections reckon Magpies by 4 games.

11:17

Osiris: That last cup of coffee has worn off now, and I need to go get some more. Sorry to those whose questions I didn’t find time for. See you all next time!

GM’s notebook - Series 44 and 45

Magpies 2-0 Bismarck
Magpies 3-2 Bismarck
Magpies 11-2 Bismarck
Denver 1-4 Magpies
Denver 1-3 Magpies
Denver 1-2 Magpies

- Tom Hart gave one of the best pitching performances of the season in the Coyotes opener, throwing 8 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 10 K. David Gaines closed it out with a 1-2-3 9th inning. Shosuke Tanaka went 2-4 on his Magpies debut.
- Ken James’s 30th save of the season was one of his rockiest. He loaded the bases with one out, walked in a run to reduce our lead to 3-2, before finally retiring the last 2 batters to secure our 9th straight win.
- The streak reached 10 with a comfortable blowout victory in Bismarck. Rob Crawford hit 2-3 with 2 HR and 2 walks.
- Dave Plummer’s walk-off, 2-out, 3-run HR broke a 1-1 tie in the first game of the Snow Sox series to extend the run to 11.
- Scintillating displays from Robert Terry (7 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) and Tadamichi Hamada (2-4, 2 HR) won game two against Denver.
- Bob Ayers will miss 3 games with knee inflammation. While he’s out, the infield will be Tanaka at 2B, Ray Parker at 3B and Eric Warner at SS.
- Hart ended the week as he started, with another terrific outing: 8 innings for just 1 run.
- Just 7 runs allowed in this week’s 6 games - fantastic.

This week: 6-0
Record: 84-51, 1st place, 12 game lead over Madison

Solís agrees 4-year contract extension with Magpies

By Maggie Pye | 23 Jul | 3,419 comments

Ernesto Solís has put an end to speculation about his future by agreeing a 4-year contract extension with the Magpies, valued at a reported $36m. The 27-year-old catcher’s future had been in doubt in recent weeks after talks between the club and the player broke down. The player’s agent said that both parties were keen to resume discussions, and the deal came together rapidly over the last 48 hours.

Club insiders say the Magpies were always eager to retain Solís’s services. The breakthrough seems to have been the player softening his annual salary demands in exchange for a longer contract than the 3-year deal he had originally sought. Solís has had a mixed season at the plate, getting on base at a respectable .330 clip but slugging an underwhelming .344. But his real value to the Magpies front office is his outstanding defense and leadership in the clubhouse.

GM’s notebook - Series 46 and 47

Magpies 8-6 Salem
Magpies 4-5 Salem
Magpies 8-3 Salem
Madison 5-3 Magpies
Madison 4-9 Magpies
Madison 2-6 Magpies

- Tadamichi Hamada’s grand slam in the 5th inning was the highlight of the 8-6 victory in Salem. Ray Parker hit 3-4 with HR #35 of the year.
- The streak ended at 14 wins, and in slightly disappointing fashion. Closer Ken James gave up a game-tying home run in the 9th frame, and the winning run in the 10th.
- James has now blown 7 saves this year (from 40 opportunities) and his walk rate of 5.01 per 9 is way up on his career average of 3.35. He is my most talented reliever, but is about to begin his new contract worth $11.5m per year, and I have a glut of talent on the minor league roster. I think Ramón González (3-1, 1.57 ERA) could be a good replacement closer. James is a candidate to be traded in the winter if I can get a satisfactory return.
- Hamada is hot right now. In the Ironclads rubber game, he hit 4-5 with 2 homers. Earl Becker hit a HR (28) and a double (29). He also won WL player of the week.
- I made three September call-ups. Allen Clary is an extra arm in the bullpen. Young first baseman Jimmy Jenkins needs a chance to show me what he can do. And Mike Howard makes his annual appearance as my specialist pinch runner.
- Hamada and shortstop Bob Ayers each had 3 hits, with 2 doubles, in the 9-4 stroll against the Brown Bears.
- I gave young lefty Scotty Reese his first major league start in the final game this week. He was superb (6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) and earned his maiden win.
- That series victory surely now ends any faint hope Madison had of catching us. We lead the North Division by 13 games and our magic number is down to 9.
- It could be another season with an all-North Division wildcard game: Madison and St. Paul are in the two spots and have a 3-game lead over a stubborn Baton Rouge.

This week: 4-2
Record: 88-53, 1st place, 13 game lead over Madison, St. Paul
