Opening Series: PHI vs. STL

PHI (0-0) vs. STL (0-0)

4/4/18: Opening Day

PHI (1-0) vs. STL (0-1), W 4-0
W: Nola (1-0, 0.00) L: Weaver (0-1, 6.00) SV: N/A

Nola's 7 dominant innings were backed by Nick Williams' HR and Scott Kingery's 2 for 2, 2 RBI night. Tommy Hunter and Hector Neris combined for a perfect 8th and 9th to lock down a no-drama win on Opening Day.

4/5/19: Game 2
PHI (2-0) vs. STL (0-2), W 6-4
W: Pivetta (1-0, 1.59) L: Reyes (0-1, 9.82) SV: Iglesias (1)

Pivetta's strong 5.2 IP were backed by Josh Donaldson's 2-run HR and multi-hit games from Carlos Santana, Rhys Hoskins, and Odubel Herrera. Blake Treinen struggled in his Phillies debut, but Raisel Iglesias got the final out of the game and the save.

4/6/19: Game 3
PHI (2-1) vs. STL (1-2), L 8-6
W: Martinez (1-0, 7.20) L: Arrieta (0-1, 15.43) SV: Tuivailala (1)

The Phillies' late-inning rally came up short as Arrieta was sunken by HRs from Ozuna and Thames. Josh Donaldson went 2 for 3 with a HR and Scott Kingery went 3 for 5 in the loss.

4/7/19: Game 4
PHI (3-1) vs. STL (1-3), W 7-5
W: McCarthy (1-0, 3.86) L: Pomeranz (0-1, 3.38) SV: N/A

Brandon McCarthy made a strong showing in his Phillies debut, going 7 IP and allowing 3 ER on 6 H. The Phillies tagged Michael Wacha for 3 R, 1 earned, and forced him out before the 5th inning. However, the most important inning for the Phils was the bottom of the 8th, when they rallied for 3 runs on 4 hits off of former Phillie Cole Hamels, providing them with much-needed insurance as Hector Neris fought his way through the 9th to shut the door. The

Phillies will host the Red Sox for 2 games in the next 2 days.

PHI vs. BOS

The Phillies would host the defending champion Boston Red Sox for a 2 game series, coming off of winning 3 of 4 against the St. Louis Cardinals in the opening series. The offense would look to continue its strong showing and the pitching would look to keep them in the game as Ben Lively was set to make his season debut.

4/8/19: Game 5
PHI (3-2) vs. BOS (3-2), L 9-4
W: Leake (1-0, 3.18) L: Lively (0-1, 7.71) SV: N/A

BOS Lineup:
Betts 9
Bogaerts 6
Benintendi 7
Devers 5
Bradley Jr. 6
Pedroia 4
Headley 3
Vazquez 2
Leake 1

PHI Lineup:
Santana 3
Donaldson 5
Herrera 8
Williams 9
Kingery 4
Hoskins 7
Alfaro 2
Lively 1
Crawford 6

The wheels fell off of Ben Lively's start in the 4th inning, as he surrendered a 2-run HR to Jackie Bradley Jr., who would go on to have 4 RBI on the day. The real blow came the next inning, when Ben Lively allowed 3 runs, 2 of which came from a HR by opposing pitcher Mike Leake. Ben Lively's RBI wasn't nearly enough to compensate for his poor performance on the mound, and Edubray Ramos surrendered 3 runs in an inning of his own. Scott Kingery went 3 for 4 with an RBI on the day in the loss.

4/9/19: Game 6
PHI (4-2) vs. BOS (3-3), W 12-3
W: Nola (2-0, 2.08) L: Price (0-2, 12.00)

BOS Lineup:
Betts 9
Bogaerts 6
Benintendi 7
Devers 5
Bradley Jr. 8
Pedroia 4
Headley 3
Leon 2
Price 1

PHI Lineup:
Santana 3
Donaldson 5
Kingery 4
Williams 9
Crawford 6
Hoskins 7
Knapp 2
Nola 1
Quinn 8

Nola's 6 quality innings were backed by a strong offensive performance across the board. The Phils' offense got the ball rolling as JP Crawford and Rhys Hoskins hit back-to-back HRs in the bottom of the 2nd. However, the Phillies really broke the game open in the bottom of the 4th, as Josh Donaldson's 3-run HR was followed immediately by a solo shot by Scott Kingery, making for the 2nd time Phillies hitters had gone back to back with HRs in the game. JP Crawford had himself a day out of the 5-spot, going 3 for 4 with a walk, 2 RBI, and a solo HR. Andrew Knapp also went 3 for 5 with 4 RBI. The Phillies face concern now, however, as Nick Williams was forced to come out of the game with a back injury after making a throw. It would be a big blow to the offense if one of the 2018 Phillies' 2 All-Stars went on the DL. Luis Garcia, Blake Treinen, and Tommy Hunter combined for 3 scoreless innings in the win. The Phillies will head to New York for 3 with the Mets.

Phillies Receive Crusing Blow as Williams Lands on DL

Phillies officials received word that Nick Williams has been sidelined for 3-4 weeks with a back injury. Williams, an offensive cog in the middle of the order, had been slashing .364/.400/.727 with 2 HR in 25 PA. Aaron Altherr and Roman Quinn will receive more playing time with Williams out, and the Phillies hope their offense can sustain itself without him. Dylan Cozens has been recalled from AAA in a corresponding move. The Phillies are set to play 3 in New York against the division rival Mets, who are 3-3 heading into the series.

PHI at NYM

After splitting a 2-game series with the Boston Red Sox, the Phillies will head into a 3-game series on the road against the New York Mets. Unfortunately, the Phillies will be without All-Star RF Nick Williams, who is on the DL for 3-4 weeks following a back injury. The Phillies head into this series at 4-2, with the Mets 3-3.

4/11/19: Game 7
PHI (4-3) at NYM (4-3), L 6-0
W: DeGrom (1-1, 3.77) L: Pivetta (1-1, 4.61) SV: N/A

PHI Lineup:
Santana 3
Crawford 6
Herrera 8
Donaldson 5
Kingery 4
Altherr 9
Alfaro 2
Pivetta 1
Quinn 7

NYM Lineup:
Pollock 8
Rosario 6
Smith 3
Conforto 7
Murphy 4
Frazier 5
Bruce 9
d'Arnaud 2
deGrom 1

Jacob DeGrom rebounded off of a poor first start to stifle the Phillies for 7.1 IP. He allowed no runs on 5 hits and a walk, striking out 8. Jason Vargas pitched 1.2 scoreless innings to finish the game. Roman Quinn had 3 of the Phillies' measly 5 hits, and Nick Pivetta went 8 efficient innings to rest the Phillies' bullpen. However, Pivetta ran into trouble in the 7th, allowing 4 runs capped by Jay Bruce's 2-run double. The Phillies will look to rebound with a well-rested bullpen for tomorrow.

4/13/19: Game 8
PHI (4-4) at NYM (5-3), L 13-3
W: Ondrusek (1-0, 7.71) L: McCarthy (1-1, 5.56)

PHI Lineup:
Santana 3
Crawford 6
Herrera 8
Donaldson 5
Kingery 4
Hoskins 7
Altherr 9
Knapp 2
McCarthy 1

NYM Lineup:
Pollock 8
Rosario 6
Smith 3
Conforto 7
Murphy 4
Bruce 9
Plawecki 2
Rivera 5
Matz 1

Brandon McCarthy's poor start didn't leave much room for the offense to catch up, as he allowed 9 runs, 4 earned, in 4.1 IP. With such a deficit, the Phillies opted to keep their bullpen rested, using Adam Morgan for 2.2 IP and Edubray Ramos for 1 IP. Steven Matz threw 4 solid innings for the Mets, and the Mets got 5 innings from a combination of Kevin Shackelford, Logan Ondrusek, and Adam Liberatore. The absence of Nick Williams is noticeable as the Phillies offense has scored just 3 runs in their last 18 innings. Aaron Altherr went 2 for 4 in the loss.

4/14/19: Game 9
PHI (5-4) at NYM (5-4), W 13-9
W: Vazquez (1-0, 0.00) L: Wheeler (1-1, 6.75) SV: N/A

PHI Lineup:
Santana 3
Crawford 6
Kingery 4
Donaldson 5
Alfaro 2
Hoskins 7
Cozens 9
Lively 1
Quinn 8

NYM Lineup:
Pollock 8
Rosario 6
Smith 3
Conforto 7
Murphy 4
Frazier 5
Bruce 9
d'Arnaud 2
Wheeler 1

Dylan Cozens would make his first start for the 2019 Phillies after being recalled in a corresponding move to Nick Williams being placed on the DL. The Phillies' offense backed a subpar start from Ben Lively, with Carlos Santana collecting 7 RBI, going 3 for 5 with 1 BB and 2 HR, including a 3-run HR that would get the Phillies going in a 4-run 3rd inning. Dylan Cozens would go 2 for 3 with 2 BB and an RBI. Felipe Vazquez picked up the win with 2 scoreless innings in relief, and the Phillies will host the Atlanta Braves for a 3-game set at Citizens Bank Park. Aaron Nola will look to continue his great start to the season tomorrow.

PHI vs. ATL

Donaldson's Go-Ahead 2-Run HR Backs Strong Start by Nola

4/15/19: Game 10
PHI (6-4) vs. ATL (5-5), W 5-3
W: Nola (3-0, 2.70) L: Ramirez (0-1, 13.50) SV: Iglesias (2)

ATL Lineup:
Albies 4
Inciarte 8
Freeman 3
Davis 7
Riley 5
Swanson 6
Ramos 2
Cabrera 9
Whitley 1

PHI Lineup:
Santana 3
Crawford 6
Herrera 8
Donaldson 5
Kingery 4
Altherr 9
Hoskins 7
Knapp 2
Nola 1

Aaron Nola continued his strong start to the season by throwing 7 IP, allowing 3 ER on 8 H and 2 BB. The Phillies drew first blood on a solo shot by Scott Kingery in the 2nd, who is off to a torrid start to the season. Aaron Altherr added a solo shot of his own in the 5th, but the most important hit of the day came after Aaron Nola relinquished the lead in the 6th by allowing 3 runs. Josh Donaldson came up to the plate facing reliever Jose Ramirez, who had just been brought into the game moments ago after a strong start by Chase Whitley. With the Phillies down 3-2 and there being 1 on and 1 out, Donaldson crushed a go-ahead 2-run HR that would give the Phillies a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Raisel Iglesias was tasked with holding a 5-3 lead, and he was up to the task as he pitched 2 perfect innings for his 2nd save of the season.

Andrew Knapp Hits DL, Butera Recalled

Andrew Knapp was placed on the 10-Day DL after his most recent game against the Braves. The contract of Drew Butera has been purchased from AAA in a corresponding move, and Butera will get his chance with the big-league club after being signed to a minor league contract in the offseason. Butera is expected to start tomorrow against the Braves.

Wild 9th Inning Leads Phillies to Walk-Off Win in Extras

4/16/19: Game 11
PHI (7-4) vs. ATL (5-6), W 7-6
W: Neris (1-0, 4.50) L: Vizcaino (0-1, 4.15) SV: N/A

ATL Lineup:
Albies 4
Inciarte 8
Acuna Jr. 7
Freeman 3
Riley 5
Puello 9
Ramos 2
Camargo 6
Gohara 1

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Santana 3
Kingery 4
Donaldson 5
Herrera 8
Hoskins 7
Altherr 9
Butera 2
Arrieta 2

Jake Arrieta's defense behind him did him no favors, as he pitched 5 innings, allowing 6 runs, 3 earned. A combination of Edubray Ramos, Felipe Vazquez, Tommy Hunter, and Hector Neris kept the Phillies in the game with 5 scoreless innings afterward, and the Phillies were able to rally to win. After a 6-run 5th for the Braves capped by a 2-run double by Wilson Ramos, the Phillies got the ball rolling with an RBI double by Scott Kingery. The Phillies added 2 more to draw within 3 on a 2-run HR by Rhys Hoskins the next inning, and the Phillies drew within a run in the 7th on a 2-run HR by Josh Donaldson. However, the rally appeared to be futile as Rhys Hoskins hit a ground ball to the shortstop Johan Camargo with runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, but Camargo bobbled the ball and everybody was safe. Aaron Altherr had the chance to be the hero, but, once again, he hit a grounder to Camargo at SS. Camargo threw to 2nd for what would've been the final out, but the throw was wild and Santana scored as the tying run! Drew Butera would fly out to end the inning, but the Phillies took advantage of 2 errors by the Braves to tie the game. In the bottom of the 10th, JP Crawford worked a 1-out walk to force out Arodys Vizcaino. The Braves decided to use SS Dansby Swanson to pitch, inexplicably. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Odubel Herrera lined a single into LF for the winning run, giving the Phillies a 7-6 victory and the series win.

Phillies' Late Rally Falls Short After Pivetta's Shaky Start

4/17/19: Game 12
PHI (7-5) vs. ATL (6-6), L 7-5
W: Soroka (3-0, 0.84) L: Pivetta (1-2, 7.13) SV: Ramirez (1)

ATL Lineup:
Albies 4
Inciarte 8
Acuna Jr. 7
Freeman 3
Cumberland 2
Swanson 6
Puello 9
Camargo 6
Soroka 1

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Santana 3
Kingery 4
Donaldson 5
Alfaro 2
Hoskins 7
Cozens 9
Pivetta 1
Quinn 8

Nick Pivetta lost control in the 3rd inning, allowing 6 runs for a total of 7 ER on 11 H in 4 IP. The Phillies used a combination of Edubray Ramos, Blake Treinen, and Tommy Hunter for 5 scoreless innings to keep them in the game, and the Phillies rallied for 3 runs in the 8th inning with patient at-bats. However, a 9th inning rally fell short as Jorge Alfaro grounded into a fielders' choice to end the game. The Phillies took 2 out of 3 from the Braves, and will have an off day before hosting the Chicago Cubs for a 3-game set.

PHI vs. CHC

Bryant's Multi-HR Night and Hendricks' Dominance Propel Cubs to Blowout Victory in Philadelphia

4/19/19: Game 13
PHI (7-6) vs. CHC (9-4), L 10-2
W: Hendricks (1-0, 3.07) L: McCarthy (1-2, 9.00) SV: N/A

CHC Lineup:
Heyward 9
Bryant 5
Rizzo 3
Schwarber 7
Contreras 2
Russell 6
Almora 8
Hendricks 1
Happ 4

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Santana 3
Kingery 4
Donaldson 5
Herrera 8
Hoskins 7
Altherr 9
Butera 2
McCarthy 1

The Cubs gave it all they had in Game 1 of the series, putting up a 5-spot in the 1st inning off of Phillies' starter Brandon McCarthy and setting the tone for the game. The Phillies' offense couldn't get much going throughout the entire game, as Kyle Hendricks allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits over 8 innings of masterful work. The Phillies will hope to rebound and win the series in front of the home crowd in these next 2 games.

Phillies Lose 2nd In a Row to Cubs Despite Strong Bullpen Performance

4/20/19: Game 14
PHI (7-7) vs. CHC (10-4), L 3-2
W: Lester (2-1, 3.71) L: Lively (0-2, 8.40) SV: Edwards Jr. (5)

CHC Lineup:
Heyward 9
Bryant 5
Rizzo 3
Schwarber 7
Contreras 2
Russell 6
Almora 8
Lester 1
Baez 4

PHI Lineup:
Santana 3
Altherr 9
Kingery 4
Donaldson 5
Herrera 8
Hoskins 7
Crawford 6
Alfaro 2
Lively 1

Both teams went to their bullpens relatively early, as starters Jon Lester and Ben Lively went just 5 innings each. The Cubs got the first run on the board with a solo HR by Kris Bryant in the 1st inning, but the Phillies took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd with RBIs by JP Crawford and Jorge Alfaro. The Cubs took back the lead with a 2-run HR by Anthony Rizzo in the 3rd, and, from there, the offenses went silent. Each team got 4 scoreless innings from their bullpen, and the Phillies couldn't quite get the big hits they needed to retake the lead, and so they fell 3-2, losing the series. The Phillies will send Aaron Nola to the mound tomorrow to oppose Jose Quintana.

Phillies Wait Too Long to Strike, Fall in Extras

4/21/19: Game 15
PHI (7-8) vs. CHC (11-4), L 3-2
W: Salas (1-0, 17.18) L: Hunter (0-1, 2.57)

CHC Lineup:
Heyward 9
Bryant 5
Rizzo 3
Happ 7
Almora 8
Russell 6
Baez 4
Quintana 1
Davis 2

PHI Lineup:
Santana 3
Altherr 9
Kingery 4
Donaldson 5
Hoskins 7
Crawford 6
Butera 2
Nola 1
Quinn 8

It was a pitchers' duel as starters Aaron Nola and Jose Quintana both pitched ace-like outings. Quintana went 7.1 IP, allowing 1 ER on 7 H and 2 BB, while Nola went 7 IP, allowing 1 ER on 6 H and 2 BB. Neither the Phillies nor Cubs could get much going until the 10th inning, when the Cubs got a PH solo HR from Willson Contreras, following by an RBI from Kris Bryant, who has been on fire at the plate all series. The Phillies got a run back on a PH solo shot of their own, this time by Dylan Cozens, in the bottom of the 10th, but they could not tie the score with another run, and fell 3-2 for the 2nd game in a row. The Phillies have been swept by the Cubs and have lost 4 games in a row overall, looking to straighten themselves out with an upcoming road trip. They head to Baltimore for a 2-game set, starting tomorrow.

PHI at BAL

Arrieta Struggles as O's Steamroll Phillies

4/22/19: Game 16
PHI (7-9) at BAL (9-8), L 10-4
W: Castro (2-0, 3.18) L: Arrieta (0-2, 10.13) SV: N/A

PHI Lineup:

BAL Lineup:
Wong 4

Machado 5
Hays 9
Santander 7
Mancini 3
Cisco 2
Beckham DH
Adrianza 6

Jake Arrieta couldn't give the Phillies what they needed coming off of being swept by the Chicago Cubs at home, going 6 innings and allowing 9 runs, 8 earned, on 13 hits. Chance Sisco had a big night for Baltimore, going 3 for 4 with 4 RBI including 2 HR. Josh Donaldson went 3 for 4 with a solo HR in the loss.

Pivetta Gets Tagged for 8 in 3rd Inning as Phillies Lose 6th Straight

4/23/19: Game 17
PHI (7-10) at BAL (10-8), L 11-5
W: Cashner (1-2, 12.67) L: Pivetta (1-3, 9.14) SV: N/A

Butera 2
Quinn 7

BAL Lineup:
Wong 4
Mullins 8
Machado 5
Hays 9
Santander 7
Mancini 3
Sisco 2
Davis DH
Adrianza 6

The wheels came off of Nick Pivetta's start in the 3rd inning, as the Orioles exploded for 8 runs in the inning. It seemed like the Phillies offense was getting something going as Odubel Herrera hit a 2-run homer in the 1st inning for an early 2-0 lead, but the bats went silent until a 3-run rally in the top of the 9th which proved to be futile. Orioles' 1B Trey Mancini went 2 for 5 at the plate with 4 RBI, and DH Chris Davis went 2 for 4 with 3 RBI. Rhys Hoskins did all he could for the Phillies, going 2 for 4 with 3 RBI at the plate, but the deficit was too great to overcome. The Phillies will head to Pittsburgh for a 4-game set after an off day and will hope to right the ship.

Pivetta Demoted After Disastrous Outing, Velasquez Recalled

Nick Pivetta has been optioned to AAA after allowing 8 ER in 4 IP against the Baltimore Orioles in his latest start. Pivetta was 1-3 with a 9.14 ERA before he was demoted, and it is becoming quite clear that the starting rotation is a major problem for this Phillies team. Vince Velasquez has been recalled from AAA in a corresponding move. The Phillies will start a 4-game set with the Pirates at PNC Park starting tomorrow.

Kingery's Bases-Clearing Double Backs McCarthy's Strong Start as Phils snap 6-Game Skid

4/25/19: Game 18
PHI (8-10) at PIT (14-6), W 9-3
W: McCarthy (2-2, 7.20) L: Glasnow (1-1, 6.14)

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Donaldson 5
Kingery 4
Alfaro 2
Santana 3
Hoskins 7

McCarthy 1
Quinn 9

PIT Lineup:
Marte 8
Cordell 9
Bell 3
Dickerson 7
Moran 5
Escobar 4
Mercer 6
Severino 2
Glasnow 1

Tyler Glasnow and Brandon McCarthy were locked in a pitchers' duel heading to the top of the 7th, as the Pirates led 2-1 after 6. The Phillies needed a big hit in order to snap a 6-game losing streak after Brandon McCarthy stepped up with a strong outing. Scott Kingery came up with a chance for that big hit, stepping up to the plate with the bases loaded and 2 outs in a 1-run game against Glasnow. Kingery came through with a big 3-run double to put the Phillies ahead 4-2, giving them a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Pirates opted to leave in Glasnow for the 8th, and Glasnow threw a whopping 146 pitches as the Phillies tagged him for 5 more in the 8th, capped by a 2-run double from Josh Donaldson. An all-around strong performance by the Phillies offense and pitching finally ended a 6-game losing streak for the Phils.

Knapp Returns from DL and Kingham Recalled in Series of Roster Moves

C Andrew Knapp has been reinstated from the 10-Day DL. C Drew Butera, who was signed to a ML contract in March, has been designated for assignment and placed on waivers in a corresponding move. SP Ben Lively has also been optioned to AAA after a disappointing start to the season. SP Nick Kingham, after also being signed to a ML contract in March, will get the call and another chance in the big leagues as he will start tomorrow against his former ballclub.

Phillies Lose As Pirates Rally for 3 in the 5th and Offense Goes Quiet

4/26/19: Game 19
PHI (8-11) at PIT (15-6), L 4-3
W: Taillon (2-1, 5.92) L: Kingham (0-1, 7.20) SV: Feliz (7)

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Knapp 2
Kingery 4
Donaldson 5
Santana 3
Hoskins 7
Cozens 9
Kingham 1
Quinn 8

PIT Lineup:
Marte 8
Hernandez 4
Polanco 9
Bell 3
Frazier 7
Escobar 5
Cervelli 2
Mercer 6
Taillon 1

Jameson Taillon did just enough to keep the Pirates in the game, as he went 6 IP allowing 3 ER on 9 hits. The Phillies offense went silent as the Pirates emptied their bullpen for 3 scoreless innings following a go-ahead RBI single by Adam Frazier to cap a 3-run 5th for the Pirates. Former Phillie Cesar Hernandez, who was traded during the offseason to headline a deal for RP Felipe Vazquez, went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI to lead the Pirates over the Phillies. Dylan Cozens went 3 for 4 and Rhys Hoskins went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI in the loss. Aaron Nola will take the ball for the Phillies tomorrow in hopes of putting them in position to possibly win the series in Game 4.

Nola's Brilliance, Hoskins' Clutch 3-Run HR Lead Phillies to 4-2 Victory

4/27/19: Game 20
PHI (9-11) at PIT (15-7), W 4-2
W: Nola (4-0, 2.31) L: Liranzo (0-1, 5.00) SV: Treinen (1)

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Kingery 4
Herrera 8
Donaldson 5
Santana 3
Hoskins 7
Alfaro 2
Altherr 9
Nola 1

PIT Lineup:
Marte 8
Hernandez 4
Polanco 9
Bell 3
Moran 5
Frazier 7
Escobar 6
Severino 2
Liranzo 1

Aaron Nola's brilliant outing gave the Phillies exactly what they were hoping for, as he went 8 IP allowing 2 ER. The Phillies' offense was up and down throughout the night, but the big blow came in the 4th inning, as Rhys Hoskins launched a towering 3-run HR that would give the Phillies all they needed at the plate for the night. JP Crawford had a big night of his own, going 3 for 3 with a solo HR in the 8th to add an insurance run. Starling Marte went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Eduardo Escobar went 2 for 4 with an RBI for Pittsburgh, but Nola guided the Phillies to the 9th inning, when he handed the ball over to Blake Treinen, who slammed the door to record his first save of the season.

Lackluster Offensive Performance Leaves Door Open for Pirates' Extra Innings Win

4/28/19: Game 21
PHI (9-12) at PIT (16-7), L 3-2
W: Neverauskas (2-0, 1.26) L: Garcia (0-1, 7.56) SV: N/A

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Kingery 4
Herrera 8
Donaldson 5
Santana 3
Hoskins 7
Knapp 2
Altherr 9
Velasquez 1

PIT Lineup:
Marte 8
Hernandez 4
Polanco 9
Bell 3
Moran 5
Dickerson 7
Mercer 6
Cervelli 2
Brault 1

The Phillies offense let a gem by Vince Velasquez go to waste, as they could muster just 2 runs in 10 innings despite a 1 R in 6 IP performance by Vince Velasquez in his first start of the season. Andrew Knapp's RBI single in the 6th gave the Phillies a 2-1 lead that they took into the bottom of the 9th, but Cesar Hernandez singled off of Hector Neris to tie the game at 2, giving Neris his first blown save of the season, and Luis Garcia issued a bases-loaded walk to Adam Frazier in the bottom of the 10th to give the Pirates a walk-off 3-2 victory over the Phillies. Andrew Knapp went 3 for 4 with both of the Phillies' RBI on the day in the loss. The Phillies will head to Arizona for a 3-game set next, with Jake Arrieta hoping to rebound from his previous start in Game 1.

PHI at ARI

Walker Silences Phillies' Bats as D-Backs Win 3-0

4/29/19: Game 22
PHI (9-13) at ARI (13-9), L 3-0
W: Boxberger (3-0, 4.09) L: Arrieta (0-3, 8.10) SV: Sherfy (2)

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6

Florimon 4
Arrieta 1

ARI Lineup:
Marte 4
Dyson 9
Goldschmidt 3
Lamb 5
Peralta 7
Avila 2
Owings 8
Ahmed 6
Walker 1

Taijuan Walker pitched 6 dominant innings, allowing no runs on 4 hits and 0 walks, striking out 8. The Phillies couldn't get anything going all night, and a 3-run 7th was all the D-Backs needed to cruise to victory over the slumping Phillies, who have lost 9 of their last 11 and are in desperate need of a spark. An RBI double by Alex Avila, as well as bases loaded-walks by Jesse Winker and Christian Walker provided the run support needed for a dominant pitching performance all-around by the DBacks. Brandon McCarthy will get the ball for Philadelphia in Game 2.

Leiter Jr. Demoted to AAA

Mark Leiter Jr. has been demoted to AAA after a poor start to the season. The Phillies have not made a corresponding move.

Phillies' Woes Persist as D-Backs Cruise to Series Win Over Phils

4/30/19: Game 23
PHI (9-14) at ARI (14-9), L 9-1
W: Godley (4-1, 2.78) L: McCarthy (2-3, 7.62) SV: N/A

PHI Lineup:

McCarthy 1
Quinn 8

ARI Lineup:
Marte 4
Winker 9
Goldschmidt 3
Lamb 5
Peralta 7
Owings 8
Ahmed 6
Stassi 2
Godley 1

Zack Godley was dominant as he pitched 7 IP of 1 R ball, allowing just 3 hits. Brandon McCarthy continued his disappointing start to the season as he allowed 6 R over 6 IP, not leaving much room for the Phillies' offense to begin with. Arizona delivered the kill shot in the bottom of the 8th with a 3-Run HR by Paul Goldschmidt off of reliever Adam Morgan, which put the D-Backs up 9-1. The most the Phillies could muster was a solo HR by Carlos Santana in the 8th, and so the Phillies look toward a new month and a chance to rebound from losing 10 of 12 to close out April...

Phillies Start May on Right Foot Thanks to 3-Run HR By Florimon

5/1/19: Game 24
PHI (10-14) at ARI (14-10), W 7-5
W: Kingham (1-1, 6.00) L: Gage (2-2, 4.78) SV: Iglesias (3)

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Santana 3
Herrera 8
Donaldson 5
Alfaro 2
Hoskins 7
Florimon 4
Altherr 9
Kingham 1

ARI Lineup:
Marte 4
Winker 9
Goldschmidt 3
Lamb 5
Peralta 7
Avila 2
Owings 8
Ahmed 6
Gage 1

The Phillies started the month of May with a vengeance as they looked to avenge their slump in the 2nd half of April, as a 3-run 1st inning was capped by a 2-run double by Rhys Hoskins. The D-Backs came within a run in the 2nd on a 2-run single by Nick Ahmed, but Pedro Florimon gave the Phillies all they would need offensively with a huge 3-run HR in the top of the 3rd. The Phillies would get another insurance run in the top of the 5th on a solo HR by Josh Donaldson. Nick Kingham pitched 7 IP, allowing 5 R, 4 earned, on 6 hits and striking out 2 to earn his first W as a Phillie. Blake Treinen pitched a perfect 8th and Raisel Iglesias shut the door with a 1-2-3 9th inning to get the save, his 3rd of the season. The Phillies will have an off day before hosting the Dodgers to begin a 6-game homestand.

Phillies April Stat Notes and Breaking the 4th Wall

Hello, everyone. I'll be breaking down the 4th wall a bit to discuss this sim. The first month of this sim has been an up-and-down ride, but I'm happy with many of the moves I made in the offseason. The starting rotation has been the most disappointing of all, particularly Brandon McCarthy and Nick Pivetta, but Josh Donaldson is starting to make me wish I had locked him up for a bit longer, actually. Felipe Vazquez, Blake Treinen, and Raisel Iglesias have all been fantastic additions to the bullpen, and I'm satisfied with how those moves have turned out so far.

In a more serious discussion about more personal matters regarding this thread and this sim, I will inform you I am playing this sim ahead of writing it, and this thread is not exactly up to date. Unfortunately, I had an issue where my game crashed and I lost the results for some 10 games. I used autoplay to replay them, and luckily emerged with very similar results, but I figured I should make that clear. I'm excited to keep writing about this sim. The Phillies are my favorite team IRL, and I am a diehard fan, so it makes sense I would choose them to follow for my first sim on this forum. I'm looking forward to sharing with you how the rest of the season is going, and I'm very grateful to all of you who are reading to this point.

Now, onto the stat notes through April!

Clearly, the starting rotation is the main issue with the team. The team's improvement will largely depend on that, as long as sustaining a strong offense throughout the season. Rhys Hoskins' struggles are not something I expect to last, at least to this extent. I am pleased with how my catcher platoon of Jorge Alfaro and Andrew Knapp has fared offensively, and Aaron Nola is of course off to a great start to his season. JP Crawford has comfortably established himself as the leadoff hitter, boasting a .388 OBP, and I have hopes that Carlos Santana will start to pick up the pace offensively. Despite the poor finish to April, I have seen encouraging signs from many of the players on the roster and I am optimistic for the future.

Go Phils! #BeBold

Garcia Lands on DL, Romero Gets the Call

6/2/19: The Phillies have placed RP Luis Garcia on the 10-Day DL following the completion of the series with the D-Backs. LHP Jojo Romero will get the call from AAA in a corresponding move. The Phillies will use Romero out of the bullpen to sustain their bullpen depth. The Phillies will host the Dodgers for a 3-game set in their first full series of the month of May.

PHI vs. LAD

Dodgers Take Advantage of Shaky Nola as Pitching Limits Phillies' Bats

6/2/19: Game 25
PHI (10-15) vs. LAD (15-12), L 6-2
W: Miller (2-1, 1.59) L: Nola (4-1, 3.07) SV: N/A

LAD Lineup:
Taylor 8
Turner 5
Seager 6
Bellinger 3
Puig 9
Pederson 7
Forsythe 4
Barnes 2
Wood 1

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Knapp 2
Herrera 8
Donaldson 5
Santana 3
Hoskins 7
Kingery 4
Altherr 9
Nola 1

The Dodgers took advantage of a shaky Aaron Nola early, scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning by an RBI Double by Justin Turner and a solo HR by Cody Bellinger. Rhys Hoskins and Carlos Santana each had an RBi of their own, but that was all the Phillies could muster as the Dodgers' bullpen hurled 5 scoreless innings to back a relatively early exit by starter Alex Wood. The Phillies will turn to Vince Velasquez tomorrow, who is coming off of a strong start in his season debut in which he took the no-decision.

Williams Returns from DL to Spark Phillies' Offense

The Phillies have welcomed Nick Williams with open arms coming off of the DL preceding their late-April slump. The Phillies will hope Williams can right the ship and turn their season around with his bat in the middle of the order once again. Dylan Cozens has been optioned to AAA in a corresponding move.

Phillies Win Slugfest Led By 5-Run 1st Inning, Alfaro's Big Night

6/3/19: Game 26
PHI (11-15) vs. LAD (15-13), W 12-6
W: Iglesias (1-0, 1.74) L: Buehler (0-4, 6.68) SV: N/A

LAD Lineup:
Taylor 8
Turner 5
Seager 6
Bellinger 3
Puig 9
Pederson 7
Forsythe 4
Ruiz 2
Buehler 1

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Donaldson 5
Santana 3
Williams 9
Hoskins 7
Kingery 4
Alfaro 2
Velasquez 1
Quinn 8

Nick Williams' return from the DL seemed to put a jolt into the Phillies' offense, as they erupted for 12 runs, scoring 5 in the 1st capped by Jorge Alfaro's RBI double. Vince Velasquez faced a rather early exit, being pulled after 3.2 IP of 2 R ball, collecting 6 Ks. Nick Williams went 1 for 3 with 1 BB and 2 RBI in his return, batting 4th, and the effect he has on this lineup is showing already. Jorge Alfaro went 4 for 5 with 2 RBI for a huge night. The Dodgers came within a run with a 4-run 4th, but that was as close as they would get, as the Phillies scored 3 in the 5th and another 3 in the 8th, breaking the game open. With the series tied at 1, the Phillies will hope to finally get back on track with a series win at home in Game 3.

Phillies Lose Heart-Breaker in Extras as Neris Surrenders 4-Run Lead in 9th

6/4/19: Game 27
PHI (11-16) vs. LAD (16-13), L 7-5
W: Miller (3-1, 1.35) L: Treinen (0-1, 2.77) SV: N/A

LAD Lineup:
Taylor 8
Turner 5
Seager 6
Bellinger 3
Puig 9
Pederson 7
Cowart 4
Barnes 2
Morton 1

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Donaldson 5
Herrera 8
Williams 9
Santana 3
Hoskins 7
Kingery 4
Knapp 2
Arrieta 1

The Phillies seemed to be well on their way to victory after Charlie Morton was forced to exit the game after 0.2 IP due to injury, as the Phils scored 4 runs off of reliever Tony Cingrani. Rhys Hoskins had a big night at the plate, going 3 for 5 with 2 RBI in the loss, and after hitting a solo HR off of Kenley Jansen in the 8th inning, the Phillies seemed to be on a collision course with victory. However, Hector Neris struggled out of the gate in the 9th with a 4-run lead, and Blake Treinen was summoned to put out the fire. Unfortunately, he was unsuccessful, and the Dodgers tied the game, scoring 4 runs in the inning which were all credited to Neris. Treinen returned for the 10th and surrendered 2 runs, leaving Andrew Miller to shut the door in the 10th inning. The Phillies' woes continue with this crushing loss, but they have a chance to rebound in a rematch with the rival New York Mets in a 3-Game series at Citizens Bank Park. Brandon McCarthy will get the ball in Game 1 to try and rebound from a disappointing start to his season.

PHI vs. NYM

McCarthy's Dominant Start, Herrera's Clutch Hits Lead Phillies to Win in Series Opener

5/6/19: Game 28
PHI (12-16) vs. NYM (15-13), W 2-1
W: McCarthy (3-3, 6.09) L: Matz (2-3, 2.43) SV: Iglesias (4)

NYM Lineup:
Pollock 8 - 3 for 4
Rosario 6
Smith 3
Conforto 7
Murphy 4
Bruce 9
Plawecki 2
Rivera 5
Matz 1

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Donaldson 5
Herrera 8 - 3 for 4, 2 RBI
Williams 9
Santana 3
Hoskins 7
Florimon 4
Alfaro 2
McCarthy 1 - 8.0 IP, 1 ER, 7 H, 0 BB

2 players brought home the victory for the Phillies tonight, being SP Brandon McCarthy and CF Odubel Herrera. In a game in which the Phillies were looking for a bounce-back start from McCarthy, they got even more, as McCarthy went 8 IP, allowing just 1 R. Mets SP Steven Matz was impressive as well, pitching 6 IP of 2 R ball, allowing just 3 H and 1 BB. However, Odubel Herrera was up to the task in providing the necessary run support for Brandon McCarthy, hitting an RBI double in the 1st to put the Phillies on the board, then hitting a solo HR in the 6th to break a 1-1 tie that would ultimately be the winning RBI. The Phillies opted to take no risks, going to Raisel Iglesias in the 9th, and he pitched a 1-2-3 inning for his 4th save of the season.

Romero Demoted, Lively Recalled

5/7/19: The Phillies have optioned LHP Jojo Romero to AAA. They have recalled RHP Ben Lively in a corresponding move. Lively was demoted to AAA on April 20, but he has been recalled to make a spot start with SP Nick Kingham currently DtD.

Knapp's 2 HR, 5 RBI Night Leads Phillies to Comeback Victory

5/7/19: Game 29
PHI (13-16) vs. NYM (15-14), W 9-5
W: Morgan (1-0, 6.32) L: Wheeler (1-3, 6.29) SV: N/A

NYM Lineup:
Pollock 8
Rosario 6
Smith 3
Conforto 7
Murphy 4
Bruce 9
Frazier 5
d'Arnaud 2
Wheeler 1

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Donaldson 5
Herrera 8
Williams 9
Santana 3 - 3 for 3, 3 R, 1 BB
Hoskins 7
Knapp 2 - 2 for 3, 5 RBI, 2 HR
Kingery 4
Lively 1

Andrew Knapp did it all in leading the Phillies to a comeback win over the Mets to secure a series win. After a shaky start by Ben Lively in which he was forced out following a 5-run 4th by the Mets, the Phillies' bullpen stepped up in a major way, pitching 5 scoreless innings to keep the Phillies in the ballgame. Carlos Santana was a major contributor, going 3 for 3 with 1 BB and scoring 3 R in the victory. However, Andrew Knapp stole the show today, hitting not one, but TWO HR. He got the Phillies started in the 2nd, hitting a 3-run HR off of Mets starter Zack Wheeler to give the Phillies an early 3-0 lead. However, there was more yet to come. Andrew Knapp came up in the 6th facing Wheeler again with a chance to give the Phillies the lead. Knapp came through, launching a 2-run HR to right to give the Phillies a 6-5 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. With the events of this game, Phillies secured their first series win since April 15-17, and they will go for the sweep in their next game.

Lively Optioned to AAA, De Los Santos Recalled

After making a spot start against the Mets in Game 2 of this series, Lively has once again been optioned to AAA. Enyel De Los Santos will get the call this time, and will likely make the next potential spot start.

Nola Falters as Phillies Settle for 2 Out of 3

5/8/19: Game 30
PHI (13-17) vs. NYM (16-14), L 9-3
W: Clevinger (2-2, 4.54) L: Nola (4-2, 3.64) SV: N/A

NYM Lineup:
Pollock 8
Rosario 6
Smith 3 - 3 for 5, 1 RBI
Conforto 7 - 3 for 5, 2 RBI
Bruce 9
LeMahieu 4
Plawecki 2
Frazier 5
Clevinger 1

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Donaldson 5 - 3 for 3, 1 BB, 1 RBI
Santana 3
Williams 9
Alfaro 2
Hoskins 7
Kingery 4
Nola 1
Quinn 8

Aaron Nola struggled as he threw 6 IP, allowing 6 R, 5 earned, on 11 H. Despite JP Crawford's 2 RBI and Josh Donaldson's 3 for 3 night, the Phillies' offense couldn't back up the shaky start by Nola, and the Phillies would have to settle for taking 2 of 3 from the Mets for the series win. The Mets got standout performances from 1B Dominic Smith and LF Michael Conforto, who each went 3 for 5 on the night in the 9-run effort. The Phillies will head on a road trip starting with 3 games in Milwaukee, hoping to build off of this series win to turn their rather middling season around.

Phillies Win Bizarre Game Behind Arrieta's Dominance, Wild Pitches

5/10/19: Game 31
PHI (14-17) at MIL (15-18), W 2-1
W: Arrieta (1-3, 5.29) L: Woodruff (1-3, 5.40) SV: Treinen (2)

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6 - 4 for 5, 1 R
Knapp 2
Herrera 8
Donaldson 5
Santana 3
Hoskins 7
Kingery 4
Altherr 9
Arrieta 1 - 8.0 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 6 K

MIL Lineup:
Villar 4
Cain 9
Yelich 7
Shaw 3
Broxton 8
Vogt 2
Lowrie 6
Gyorko 5
Woodruff 1

Game 1 of the series got off to an odd note, as the Phillies' only 2 runs came from JP Crawford and Rhys Hoskins each scoring on wild pitches. In most cases, that would not be a very convincing offensive performance, but it was enough to get the job done as Jake Arrieta hurled 8 masterful innings, allowing just 1 R on 4 H. The Phillies forced Brewers' starter Brandon Woodruff out after 3.2 IP, but the Phillies couldn't do any damage against the Brewers' bullpen, leaving Arrieta to pitch his way through the rest of the game with the slim lead. Blake Treinen answered the call with a 1-2-3 9th inning to shut the door for the victory.

Phillies' 6 Run 1st Inning Outburst, McCarthy's Strong Start Leads Phils to 2nd Straight Series Win

5/11/19: Game 32
PHI (15-17) at MIL (15-19), W 12-3
W: McCarthy (4-3, 5.57) L: Hader (1-1, 5.70) SV: N/A

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6 - 2 for 4, 2 BB, 1 R
Donaldson 5
Herrera 8 - 3 for 3, 2 BB, 3 R
Williams 9 - 2 for 4, 4 RBI
Santana 3 - 3 for 4, 1 BB, 2 RBI
Hoskins 7
Kingery 4
Alfaro 2
McCarthy 1 - 8.0 IP, 3 R, 0 BB

MIL Lineup:
Villar 4
Phillips 9 - 3 for 4, 1 R
Yelich 7
Shaw 3
Broxton 8
Vogt 2
Lowrie 6
Freese 5
Hader 1

The Phillies stormed out of the gate in the 1st, getting RBI singles from Nick Williams, Carlos Santana, and Rhys Hoskins all in succession. However, the big blow came when the next batter, Scott Kingery, hit a 3-run HR to give the Phillies a 6-0 lead with 1 out in the 1st. This took the pressure off of Brandon McCarthy for the most part, as he cruised for 7 scoreless innings before allowing 3 runs in the 8th, still completing a very strong start in the end. The Phillies also got HRs from Jorge Alfaro and Nick Williams in the offensive outburst, and the Phillies have secured back-to-back series wins.

Brewers Walk Off After Alfaro's 9th Inning, Game-Tying, Pinch Hit HR

5/12/19: Game 33
PHI (15-18) at MIL (16-19), L 7-6
W: Knebel (1-4, 4.80) L: Treinen (0-2, 3.07) SV: N/A

PHI Lineup:
Crawford 6
Donaldson 5
Herrera 8
Williams 9
Santana 3
Hoskins 7
Knapp 2
Kingery 4
De Los Santos 1

MIL Lineup:
Villar 4 - 3 for 5, 1 RBI
Cain 9
Yelich 7
Shaw 3
Phillips
Freese 5
Lowrie 6
Pina 2
Anderson 1

In the wake of a miraculous PH 3-run HR by Jorge Alfaro, the Phillies couldn't quite complete the comeback, with the Brewers walking off in the bottom of the 9th. The Brewers jumped on Enyel De Los Santos in his MLB debut, scoring 3 runs in the 1st on a bases-clearing triple by Brett Phillips to take a 3-0 lead. Down 6-2 heading into the 8th, the Phillies began to claw their way back with an RBI double by Nick Williams to make it 6-3. However, the Phillies got another chance in the 9th with Jorge Alfaro set to pinch-hit for the pitcher. With 2 on and 1 out, Alfaro belted a fastball from Brewers' closer Corey Knebel to tie the game at 6. The Brewers didn't let that get them down, however, and they won in the bottom of the 9th on a walk-off RBI single by Jonathan Villar, preventing the Phillies from earning the sweep in Milwaukee. The Phillies will head to St. Louis next for a rematch from Opening Day.

Cardinals Rally Late to Win in 10

Note: This is the point where my game crashed and I let autoplay catch up. The overall W-L was pretty much the same, but keep in mind this is not me controlling in-game decisions.
