Pitcher Fatigue

Pitcher fatigue is not what it needs to be in my opinion. With modern day settings you can use a relief pitcher with good stamina in a stopper role and get 80+ appearances and 120+ innings, which is basically impossible in today's game with players throwing 93/95+ at almost all times (increased velocity is a marker for injury risk).

With that, I introduce to you Fatigue Units. Created by Dr. Mike Sonne, Research Director at The Baseball Development Group, it's built upon the most up to date research we have on pitcher fatigue. Looking through the top fatigue unit seasons located in the article, you'll find a lot of names that make sense, such as Johnny Venters having the two highest seasons of all time.

Here's another article he's written for The Athletic (paywall) for some more information.

And here's a link to his spreadsheet that includes 2018 Fatigue Units as well as the most single season Fatigue Units since 2008.

It's all well and good for information to recreate the current era of baseball, but one must remember that other periods can also be recreated, periods when, for example, pitchers routinely pitched the entire game. Any system must be flexible enough to account for the evolution of the sport.
