2018 NFL Pick-the-Loser Pool

As far as I understand, undue cruelty against leather eggs will continue in just a scant few days, so here it is, the fantastic 2018 NFL Pick-the-Loser Pool bonanza, where being The Biggest Loser is actually rewarded for once!

Come closer, come closer, as we will seek a replacement for Mr. Bobbuttons as the 2017 Biggest Loser this year, in a competition following only a few select and simple rules:

+++

Section I - General Rules

1. Picks must be submitted by posting in this thread at least one hour before the start of the respective game. If you miss the deadline for the Thursday game, however, you can still pick f.e. a team that plays on Sunday.

2. Submit your picks as early as you want, but if you change it for whatever reason, make a new post with the new pick since I might have drafted your pick into my excel file already. Your most recent post in this thread will count.

3. The deadline for changing picks is one hour from the start of the respective game. The deadline time is calculated from the time indicated on the schedule posted to this thread by your host.

4. You must not pick a winning team with any pick. If you pick a winner, you are out. In the case of a tied game, postponement, and other acts of god, the disaster draft rules in Section IX shall be applied.

5. You must make a pick every week. If you miss to make a pick on any team, you are automatically out.

6. You must not pick the same team multiple times.

7. Please consider that your host's knowledge of football is limited to random trivia like the Heidi Game and he doesn't know that one team from that other team. State your picks clearly with either team name or team city, or both. No clever word plays, no pseudo nicknames, no fun slang. Your host does not know who the Wombats, Wheezers, or Wildthings are. If your most recent pick does not state a team city (or state where applicable) or name, and your host can't make sense of it, you are automatically out.

Section IX - Disaster Draft

8. In case of a tied game in which you made your pick, since tying is for losers, you shall advance to the next week.

8a. In case of nature, invasion by Canada, or other acts of god causing suspension or postponement of a game in which you made your pick *before* the announcement of the suspension or postponement, you shall advance to the next week.

9. In the case that all players in any given round lose (all picked a winner), the game will continue with all players in the most recent round still eligible for the next round, except for those that made no valid pick at all.

Section XII - Mystery Rule

10. As soon as a sufficiently small number of players remain, picks will have to be made via PM to your host unless all remaining players prefer to post in this thread. "Sufficiently small" should be understood as "less than a handful".

+++

I hope that no clarities whatsoever remain.

Appeals against these rules or any decisions by your host can only be directed at Jeff, the Football Raccoon, who has never overruled any of my decisions because I have a bag of peanuts and Jeffs totally digs peanuts.

Do not hesitate - join the other aspiring losers in the pool to-day!

I stopped playing last year (won 2 yrs ago) because of rule #10.

What is the big deal with secrecy? We know who has picked which team, we know who is left to pick. Those who get eliminated part way through suddenly get shut out and can't see any picks.

Why are picks open for all to see, then suddenly hidden?

The thought behind it is mainly related to a situation where only two players are left over (which went on for like two months last year), where one guy would have to pick first, and the other guy would be able to make his pick also considering what the first guy picked. If the second guy does not feel comfortable with the selections he has, and there are no obvious Browns picks left over, he might elect to just match the first guy's pick and get a better schedule the following week.

I don't buy it - you only have so many picks you can make, and as the weeks go by, your choices get slimmer and slimmer.

And isn't that part of the challenge of the whole thing, picking a loser every week, not just when there's Browns picks? What you're saying is, when the going gets tough, we'll allow you to hide your pick from everyone else.

I understand your point in a sense, but I don't understand how this "fun" little game became so competitive that we're worried someone is going to make a "same" pick just for the sake of lasting another week and earning "bragging rights" on a forum. I'd like to think those of us who play do it for the fun. I like to think the challenge of picking a loser is worth more than the challenge of "I need to win bragging rights so I'll pick the same team this week so I can stay in" mentality.

Sorry - I grew up in the 50's and 60's - winning wasn't "everything" or the "only thing" back then

Any other opinions? Voice them now or voice them never.

Or even better - some picks to make fun of! (said the guy that can't tell the Titans from his thumb)

My opinion is Bluenoser is absolutely wrong in his opinion about rule 10. Once the "game" gets down to a few participants, one of them could wait until the others pick and just make the same pick (assuming that team hasn't already been used earlier in the season) to ensure moving on to the next week. Unfortunately, it is the way the world works now. You have to assume everyone is a schmuck until they prove you wrong.

If anyone is a betting man, bet against what I pick. I know I would. Oh and in case anyone is interested in the Eagles Falcons game, Alshon Jeffery and Carson Wentz won't be playing against the Falcons in week 1.

Week 1: San Francisco 49ers

No starters or regulars are going to play in Week 4 of the pre-season. So injuries are not a concern. Occasionally there are trades of significance, but not too often. And cuts are usually overpaid, under-performing vets, or insignificant rookies. So no real worries there either.

Edit: And of course, Khalil Mack is traded to......da Bears. Still doesn't change my mind though,

Three more days, boys, just three more days! Get pickin'!

(Although you can of course pick until before the Monday games in line with the rulebook)

(Yes I know I have yet to pick; still waiting for a consensus opinion on who sucks to develop )

That's hard to do in week 1. There can be a consensus, but no one knows crap. They're just going by last year. I almost picked Chicago but didn't because they're not going to be a joke this season, and that was my opinion before KMack joined the team. They also got the #1 LB in the draft who appears to be a beast. They're building a winner out there. Week 1 is always a crap shoot.

Tampa Bay's a solid pick for the first three weeks. I'll at least go with them for W1.

After thorough evaluation (read: looked at the schedule for two minutes, then shrugged) I will go with the 49ers.
