Welcome to "The Roaring Twenties: Babe and the Birth of the Bomb", my OOTP 14 replay of the 1920 season (and perhaps beyond). As you have no doubt surmised, the story is told through facsimiles of the actual Sporting News issues of the times.

I originally had this idea a few years ago (OOTP 11) and began it at that time. Everything was running smoothly and I had made it to the first of June when, all of a sudden, my source for the Sporting News issues (Paper of Record) went off-line and I was left hung out to dry. Six months or so later, Paper of Record was back on-line, but now they were in business and wanted money to see the goods. I refused to pay up (mostly because I was poor, but also because I was peeved). But then a thoughtful reader offered to procure the issues for me and I accepted and revisted the dynasty. However, a new version of OOTP had been released in the meantime, so I tried to start it up in OOTP 12. However, the drudgery of redoing all the work soon overcame my enthusiasm and I dropped the project. I didn't want to do work in OOTP 12 that I had already done in OOTP 11 and I didn't want to play OOTP 11 when there was a shiny new version to explore.

But now with this new version of OOTP, I've got the itch to do this again and thanks to that same thoughtful reader, diamondreplays, I have all the Sporting News issues I need to make it through 1920.

If you remember my old dynasty, you need not fear that this run through will just be a rehash of that one. Every issue is being remade from scratch. Of course, a lot of the same stories are being used, but there is a lot of new material as well. The originals were made using only GIMP and a spreadsheet. It was very tedious. I've since acquired the open source DTP program, Scribus, and it has made creating the issues a blast. Although the program does have its idiosyncrasies that are sometimes a pain in the rumpus, it sure beats my old methods all to pieces.

And, of course, the games will be all new.

The dynasty is what I call an ultra-historical sim. I play out every game. I am using real lineups and transactions. Injuries are turned off in the game, but we will duplicate all real injuries in the sim. I co-manage all the teams, deciding in-game substitutions and allowing the AI manager to take care of strategy decisions. I have worked long and hard to get the in-game settings correct to duplicate actual results as closely as possible. I am using my own set of park factors, my own league modifiers, my own strategy profiles and I have even re-rated every player, paying extra special attention to Babe Ruth. In default OOTP he tends to under perform. He does not in "The Roaring Twenties". He MAY however, in our particular run through.

Here is a comparison of the average results for 8 run throughs of 1920 that Babe Ruth accomplished in default OOTP and "The Roaring Twenties":

As you can see, Babe looks a lot more like the Babe now. However, there is no guarantee that he will be up to snuff in our particular sim. He could hit anywhere from .300 with 35 homers to .430 with 75 homers. But he is at least more likely to reproduce his actual results than before.

Anything you read in the Sporting News facsimiles that pertains to off-the-field incidents is 100% reprinted verbatim from The Sporting News or some other periodical of the time, except for minor edits to get the stuff to fit in the space I need it to. Stories pertaining to game results are written by me, sometimes from scratch and sometimes using an actual article as a foundation. I try hard to maintain the feel of the original writing, even if I cannot maintain the facts.

I encourage feedback and discussion of the events. I particularly would like to know if the presentation is satisfactory to everyone's eyes. I had no complaints with the old issues and the new ones are a lot bigger and easier to read. I play on a 42" monitor, so everything has been optimized for 1080p (1920x1080). At that resolution the issues should just fill the screen with no left to right scrolling necessary. If the majority think it necessary, I can easily make issues larger, but I can't really make them any smaller without them being a strain on my old eyes.

One other small detail: I really love doing this stuff, but I can't allocate 100% of my OOTP time to it. Fictional play is my main source of entertainment. So, occasionally I need to take breaks from this (especially when the work starts feeling like work). But I promise I will always return to it eventually....and my promise is as good as any dynasty writer who ever lived.....well, except for Eugene Church....he's got me beat by a mile.....he definitely wins the prize for being able to stick with a project through thick and thin.

Finally, I dedicate this dynasty to the two Hall of Famers who first got me hooked into historical play: captaincarl and PhilleFever, with their Red Sox and Philly dynasties, respectively. capataincarl hasn't been around in a while, but PhillieFever is still here and currently has a Philly thread going strong. I encourage you to check his stuff out; he goes the extra mile to make the replay as enjoyable for a reader as it can be.

First off, thanks for the nice words, as you know historical dynasties have always been my favorite due to my intense interest in the history of the game so I'm really interested to see how this plays out. Of course I'll be rooting for the Philly clubs, especially the Athletics, the only club with a real chance at a championship during this decade. I've actually tried contacting our Captain recently through PM but didn't get a response, hopefully he's ok and has just moved on.

1920 - It was a great year. Despite what some people are saying, I didn't live it... I just read about it. I am looking forward to reading more about it here. I love the format, and it looks great on my screen.

Good luck, and enjoy.

P.S. I think I had that same typewriter back in school. It was used, of course.

I wanted to mention one other thing about the odd rules during the early days, and it concerns home runs. Did you know that up until 1930 AL/1931 NL, when the ground rule double rule was introduced, that a ball that bounced into the stands was counted as a home run?

Pretty interesting to compare your Ruth Stats with all those and now throw in my Ruth's stats from my Dynasty, I think we can confirm that Babe Ruth was the greatest Player ever...hands down!:

Roaring 20's ruth

Beantown Bambino Ruth

While my Ruth was not quite up to your offensively the fact that he could still produce like that while pitching in 23 games that season is pretty impressive

Can't wait to see what he can do this time!

(Maybe you can sneak Ruth onto the mound a few times )

He did pitch one game in 1920, so he will pitch one game for us....

P.S. If Ruth had really stayed in Boston, he may not have ever hit 30 homers in a season....it was a TOUGH place to hit them out back in those days....
